Mr. Editor t
When we read Dr. Livingston's
expk rations ot inner Africa ami see
how those uncivilized people live, we in
oar civilized land shouM be eratcful to the
giver of every good and perfect gttt, tbat
we have the gospel of salvatitm, which
contains tbe laws of life and liberty. This
gosel gives ns not only the divine but
also tbe civil law. The former which was
fiulSUed ia Christ secures to tbe true be
liever eternal lite; the latter protects u
against tbe wrongs from our lellowroen.
liood laws are an inestimable blessing to
a law abiding people. For look at tbe
vast difference in the condition of morals,
between a people left to follow human na
ture aaly. having no laws to restrain them
fnm evil actions, as is the case among un
civilized people, and a people eoverned by
divine and civil laws, the first leadiug
them to Christ, the last keeping them from
doing harm to others.
But how comes it that ia a land like
ours, where we have wholesome laws and
christian privileges, where we claim to
stand so much higher than uncivilized na
tions because of our laws and light, license
should be trranted to. sell intoxicating li
quor to ruin men, aad especially the young
by tbe thousand. And how comes it that
when an effort is made by a community to
have nn license granted to sell strong
drink in their midst, young boys of three
and s buid breadth high, speak cp and ,
say. "yoo only make it worse."
Do tbe young and rising generation
know that if no license to sell whiskey
were granted, or if laws were made for
bidding its sale, aith the xiew of keeping
them from being ruined by it, tbat then the
case will only I worse that more whis
key will be sold and drank than before?
If "so then I think it is high time for us to
lock where we stand in tbe scale ot Chris
tianity . or may I say. of civilization.
In conclusion I will ask a plain question.
Is it right that the court on the one boa J
should grant license to men to sell liquor
and make drunkards, and that ministers
on the other hand should preach against
intemperance and then by so doing get tor
their enemies, both the seller aad the
drinker.

Fkiede-SS, Pa.. Feb. 23. 170.
Deac Herald t In the Herald of
February ICth appeared two anic.es. one
on intemperance and the other on candi
dates. I wish to connect these two. The
writer of the ankle on intemperance
quotes Coilossian g : gl : "loucu not.
taste not, handle not," which forms a very
g"oJ rule for OS all to follow. Wben aa
old horse has a habit of jumping iato an
oats field every night, the young horses
w ill snon observe it, and commencing to
think tbat green oats most be good, w ill
follow. Just so it is with men who go to
thc bar and take a drink, young boys will
watch and follow, and if the landlord re-tns-d
to give thera a drink because tbey
are minors, thew will go to their friends
who are of age aad employ them to gtt a
flask filled, and then they have enough to
get dead drunk the very first pop. The
other art icle, refers to voters making choice
of candidates qualified to fill the offices of
Legislature and Associate Judge. I firmly
believe that it is the duty of ever christian
mn every man belonging to aay branch
ot the christian church (of which class
Somerset county has a large majority) to
vote tor men w bo w iil oppose tbe liquor
traffic in every shape and lorm- Vote lor
men for Associate Judge who will not
grant license. Vote for men for Legisla
ture who will oppose a!) liquor license
laws, and we shall aid very much not only
in reforming the old cratx, the habitual
drunkards, but in training tne young and
rising genetation not to become drunk
ards, but sober, good citizens. Xow for
the tobacco question. I agree witb X. W.
M. that tobacco is also an intemperate hab
it, just as much so aa the other. I believe
that there is a great deal of idolatry prac-1
laced through and witb tobacco. Ilea go j
into church where Israels God is worship
ed with tbe idol tobacco in the pocket, and i
the mind ia very often diverted trom th
true worship because of tbe little idol in
the pocket, and before the services are;
quite over tbe little idol must come out of
ibe pocket and receive a kiss. They fear j
the Lord and serve tobacco, as we read in j
Sec tod Kings, 17 chapter, 33 verse : j
"Tbey feared tbe Lord and served their i
own 6ods." I know whereof I speak 1
having useed the weed myself for about j
fifteen or sixteen years, and more than
once my attention was diverted front tbe
sermon or a prayer by tbe idol tobacco in
my pocaet. and before going out oi tne
