S.t iNPi.tNo iv a Cnrucu. In a certain

embarrassed w hcu the collection was taken

which the basket wls thrutt, and he
plunged his hand into his pocket, kept
the collector wailing a moment and tnen
quickly thrust a bill evidently the first

man who had charge ot the udlcciioa, nut

veyance used m travelling there, it u not
s-) "demnit ion neighboring." I found
little change in the inhabitants or iu the
dwellings. Soni2 once familiar facts have
disappeared, and many children have
come upon the scene. Perhaps men and
women there have grown older, but I am
similar tj that gjud old soul who, when
told l.y hi wife that 6l.e wu getting

eyes so dim that he couldn't see it.
This is spoken of Berlin on the hill.
Jiiot I a;Io t.-iu, on the south, is the Buf
falo Valley UuilroaJ dopot, a comfortab'.o
and commodious building. This railroad
to me was a new institution. The train
was almost ready to start, and there was
a considerable number of persocs on board,
but when the fctart was made, these gently
stepped to Ihe depot platform, leaving
your nuiuuie sen am lue oniy passenger,
An easy, cozy ride was had, with the con-

line. The traveller is absolutely ial'e on
the UuUalo Valley he has no tear ol col
lisions or any of the accidents to w hich
passengers 011 the rail arc usually subject.
Even several footmen in front of the train
appeared to be under no apprehensions of
peril. The train run on time and easily
made its connection.
It is only faying what ! already well
known when I staie that the ButTulo Valley
is one of the riche-st portions of Somerset
County. The soil for agricultural pur-
poses is rarelv surpassed. The buildings
are good, the fanners liirilty. None ot
t.hem are compelled to buy wheat or any
other faira prod jet. The enormous min

tant day make it immensely valuable. Mr.
Voting, of the State Board of Geological
Survey, who has lately n;ade an examina

LITTELL'S LIVING AGE FOlt l&TC
riic fact that The LirinjAje soon enters
upon its thlrtv-third year of continuous
and successful publication, is a remarkar
ble one in the history ot periodical. And
as it is the only thorough and fresh com
pilation of a current literature wtiicn em
braces the productions ol the ablest living
writers in science, nction, poetry. History,
biography, politics, theology, philosophy,
criticism'and art, its kapoiiuncc to Am
erican readers can hardly be overrated.
Ia no other way, in fact, can so much of
the best work of the best tuinds of tbe
lime be ouiaineil so cneapiy or
conveniently, 53 through thi; ituyijard
eclectic weekly.
The list of lorerr.ost authors of the day
represented in its page?, will be found in
t.ie prospectus publiehed in another col
uiun, and is ot itself suflicient evidence of
the ti'fiUty of the magazine, while in quan
tity of reading it is nuapproached.
Tht hiring As has alwat s stood at the
head ofiis class" not only as the best, but
a.l thins considered, the theapist of the
I eclectic: and since its recent absorption of !
I "A-rry -if ;'. ,'" U praelieailv 'without
a rival. In the multiplicity ot periodicals
claiming attention, it has become almost
a necessary to every person or family of
intelligent";! and taste: tor it, alone, fur
nishes such a compendium oi' whatever
is of immediate interest or permanent
value in the literary world as to render it
an invaluable economizer of t-hae, labor
and money.
For those desiring the cream of both
home and lurebtn literature, the publish
ers make some combinations with other
leading periodicals, by which a subscriber
is. at a'recmkably small cost, put in pos
session of the best which the current liter
ature ot the world tifTords. The prospec
tus should be examined by all in selecting
their periodicals for the new year. The
volume U-gins January 1st, but to those
remitting 'now, the intervening weekly
numbers are sent grati.
THE FITTfcBl KUM fiAKETTE.
Those wbo arc arranging for their home
papers for the next year, will do wisely to
send for sample copies of the PiTTsr.cimn
Gazette, Daily or Weeklv, as it will be
seen to be the best pujier published in Pitts
burgh. It 1st he oldest, being nearly nine
ty years old, aud has kept pace with all
phases of modern newspaper progress. It
is printed on new type, and on clean, white,
handsome paper, !u new is spewUiily
full, and accurate. It receives Cable news
Iroru Eurojie, and Dispatches from all
parts ot the country. It has Special Cor
respondents in Washington, during the
session of Congress, and at Harrisburg
during the session of the Legislature, and
will give full reports of all that is interest
ing in the proceedings. Its Local r.ews is
complete and varied, yet chaste and pure.
Its Editorials contain trenchant discussions
of ail current sulijecbi, and ileal indepen
dently w ith all Issues of the hour. ' The
paper is Republican in Politics, but holds
that the party is supe rior to cliques and
rings. Its Alarkcl lUportt ere enptcially
full and complete, and hare a reputation
th'il i vuU-nprtad, for ateurary and re
liability. Its reports ot the hire Hfork
market are aLo the best in tho city. In
frequent instances, parties in the country
have saved or made considerable sums by
following the accurate reports of prices, giv
en by the Gazette, in making their sales.
It also contains Agricultural, Household,
and Family reading, carefully selected.
Thus it is a family paper of great excel
lence and rare cheapness, as to price. Its
circulation U the largest ot the Pittsburgh
press. The Gazett? is furnished at the
following rales, and we claim that they
afford the cheapest newspaper published,
when the size and quality ot the p iper are
considered:

Otsego ranks first among the counties of
New iork in the crowing of hops. The
young plants are set out in the spring In
rows rsiuglng two wavs at rlstht angles to
each other, and from six to nine feet apart
Tbe intervening space is usually planted
in corn or potatoes the first year, and the
whole submitted to a thorough tillage
with the plough. . The poles used are for
lie most part hemlock, and about 18 feet
long. Tho viae niiii.1 Mind around the

two years to produce a crop' from new

September and Is a seacoa of much hilari
ty and enjorment. Men, women and chil
dren turn out to lend a helping hand.
The hops are dried In a kiln and pressed
into bale. They are sold at price s vary
ing from ten cents to a half dollar per
pound, deending on the quality of the
article and the demand lor it At present
they arc a drag in the market, hardly pity
ing for the labor trended in cultivating

them and prices are good, greater profits
are realized than could be made from the
same amount of land planted with any
other crop; the net income of one farmer
from three acres of hops was f.00 several
years ago.

I have alluded to the neatness aud good
order olserved by the penpie of this com
munity in the management nf their farm
buildings, etc Economy seems to be
written on every barn, wood house, and
pig sty. Indeed they as far surpass us
Pcnnsy lvanians in this particular as we do
the people of the South and West. But it
is not that species of economy which is
shown only in the saving of dollars and
cents; on the contrary the saving of time,
labor, money, and material, all seem to
have been reduced to the most perfect sys
tem. The firms are small, little or nn
tax is paid on unproductive capital. Eve
rything is in its place, were in can be found
whenever it is needed; no time is wasted

ly attain with all our push, enterprise, and
go aheadativeness.

Associations of the past as well as of
the present linger among the bills and val
leys ot this regoin. Many events of the
most thrilling interest connected with the
old French war and the Revolution trans
pired in Otsego and Schoharie counties.
It was through this country that Brant
led his murderous bands to the bloody
massacre of Wyoming. The town of
Cobleskill in Schoharie county, was the
scene of a battle between the colonists on
ore side and Indi:.n4 and Tories on the
other in the vear 1T7J. The same place
was captured and pil'aged by Bract and
his marauders in 177$. Among the cap
tives taken ht that lime was a certain Mr.
Warner and his son, ancestors ot the lady
at whose house I am at present residing.
The younger Warner made his escape, but
his father was taken to Canada and there
retained as a prisoner a number of years.
While speaking of Indians I am drawn
from the realm ot tact to tbat ot fiction,
when I remember that this couulv U the
scene of one of Cooper's most thrilling
tales Leatuer Mocking. As 1 expect to
be back among the frosiv tons ot thunder
before many Javg, I shall cl e mv letter
