I have beard many persons argue against
the propriety of charging aa admission fee
to a place of worship, bet there are al
ways numerous incidental expenses In
curred in eondiicting meetings of this
kind, which have to be paid, and I could
imagine ot no better or less burdensome
method of collecting the money. The
charge is so small that the admission is,
comparatively, free. Last Sunday the at
tendance was between three and four thou
sand, bat during the wek, I suppose, it
would not average more than five or six
hundred per diem ; nevertheless the gate
money, in the aggregate, is a source of
considerable revenue.
The camp grounds comprise a grove of
noble old forest trees, which perhaps, in
bygone years have listened to the pravers
of poor, dusky Lo, as he in voked the Great
Spirit. Good, "bread walks lead to all pans

water of superior nualitv, that is, when
the sediment ia the spring is not too vio
lently disturbed, which is frequently the
case where parties are in a harry to dip up
a pail or other vessel full of water, to make
roc-m for the next comer. I Lave seen
fifteen or twenty people standing ia wait
at a spring at one time and be fire one half
ot them could be helped, or help them
selves, the spring would be as turbid as a
mad puddle. With very little care this
couid all be obviated. Excuse the digres
sion, but I was a victim to the experience
described above. To return to our descrip
tion of the grounds : quite a number of
handsome couages have been erectet', aad
are built so as to enclose a qtsadranrular
plot of ground, where divine service is
held under a large canvas canopy, which
protects the worshippers from tiie heat of
tbe sea and the inclemency of the weath
er. Several streets diveree from the north
end of the quadrangle, along which some
very pretty cottages have been built, and
yon occasionally find one with the grouad
ia front of it tastefully ornamented with
flowe:i and small airuhbery. A large
hotel or boarding house is located on the
grounds to provide accommodations for
transient visitors and others who are not
so fortunate as to possess cottages.
On the Sunday we were there the ma
jority ot the people seemed to have brought
their dinners with them, for at about noon,
alter the morning service was over, the
errands became dotted ail around with
littlie group, spreading table cloths, nap
kins, newspapers and carrying baskets and
packages from buggies, carriages aad
wagons standing near at hand, while every
now- and then yoa would see some solitary
individual dive deep into the recesses ot
as ample pocket aal produce a sandwich,
biscuit, ot perhaps a fragment of ginger
bread, which would be devoured with evi
dent relish, as thocsa devotional exercise
