' " The season is now at hand for planting trees particularly the more delicate fruit, such as peaches, -plums, pears, grapes, etc., and 1re cannot too strongly impress upon the people of this section the great importance of devoting a small portion of their time and means to the growth of fine fruit. It is too common for persons to procure cheap fruit, plant it imperfectly, and then let it take care of itself, by which operation pretty much of the whole in vestment Is wasted. There will be a grand celebration at Greensburg on Saturday, May 15th, the one hundredth anniversary of the declars tion of independence by the people of Hannastown, Westmoreland County, Pa. Two persons have been selected from each of the counties that were formed from Westmoreland since 1773. The new license law, now in lorcc, pro vides that a hustiand, wife, parent, child, guardian or employer of any drunkard may notify any jhtsou, in writing, not to sell such drunkard intoxicating drink; if such notice is not complied with the per son giving the notice may lecover from tlie one selling damages not less than $50 cor more than $oo0, as may be assessed by the tourt or judge; a married woman may sue for such damages tor her own separate use; if either party should die the action may continue without limit as to damages. While attempting to decide the salary question at the School Directors Conven tion last week, some of the gentlemen figured the thing down to small points, and it was ascertained that by increasing the salary of the Sujerintendent to 1,250, it would cost this county a little less than four dollars. This was the figure pro Dos ed by CoL Yulzv-'s proposition, and that gentleman determined that it should not hang fire on the score of economy proffer ed to pay the increase out of his own pocket But the proposition, though fair ly carried on the first vote was lost on the second. Although the few necessary and sim ple rules are well known to most plant growers, there are, judging from inqui ries, some who seem still unconscious of the injury they inflict upon their pets by untimely application of water. When in a ..healthv prowing state, all vegetation loves a liberal supply of moisture, and this should be given, not in little and fre quent sprinklings but only when there are signs that it is required, and then in co pious measures. Plants at rest do not ab sorb moisture very freely, and too much of it engenders disease, first at the root, and later the foliage. J. II. Fritz. NJow that spring has fairly opened, there are several opera tions in the garden and orchard of consid erable importance that are omitted by be ing over looked at the right time. Fruit trees set out in autumn are some times seriously injured by the wind, which, bending them about, forms a hole or open ing around the stem. In such cases take a spade and throw away the soil as fur down as the hole extends, and then re place freh earth compactly pressed about them. If they do not now stand firm enoucb, drive one or moie stakes in a slightly inclined position, and tie the tree to these with a neat band of straw. : The soil is apt to become hard and com pact, and to form a crust aboct autumn set trees. Break this crust, and make a mellow surface for some feet about them. Young or ' newly set trees require no watering before the leaves expand, and injury is often done by thus soaking the roots before there are any leaves to draw away Uie water. Alter the leaves had opened, watering will be required only in rare instances : and when necessary, it should never be applied at the surface of the ground, but the soil should always be nrst thrown away wuu a spade from the roots, and after the watering . replaced again. in som parts of the country there have been large numbers of the orchard or tent caterpillar, which have left their rings of eggs on the young twigs. If these are now cut oil with a clipping pole, it will prevent in every instance a large nest of caterpillars and be much easier done than after these have growu and begtin their ravages. Young trees which, have been grafted or bndded last summer, should have all tbe starting buds rubbed off below the grafts before the leaves have opened. It doae in season no check will be given to the tree, and the newly set craft will re ceive all the benefit ; but if left till the leaves have opened and those supernu merary shoots have grown some inches a serious check is given to the tree. Pear and cherry trees are especially sensitive to such treatment and are otten injured by rubbing off shoots too late. Thk Peoples Freight Railway. Mr. Nathaniel McConaughy, the engineer of the above named company, is in town in the interest of that corporation. The problem of cheap transportation .is excit ing & great deal of attention in both East and West. In the East because or the necessity of getting provisions and the raw material ior most classes of manufac- turies at a ranch cheaper rate, in the West because of the necessity of getting their wheat and other cerials to the seaboard at a rate that will prove more- remunerative lo the producers, and allow h:.m to under sell other countries in the European mar kets. The people have long felt that our present railroad system does not meet these wants, while onr water coarses by the in flexibility of their course, the limited i -ana. uiey are able to reach and the f T?s" thn0n them are inadequate j w auuiu neceesarr : reiiei.
