duv of intense anxiety. A large moo,
numbering about 300 to 400 . men,
armed with muskets, guns and clubs,
fathered near Ebervale, this nioruicg,
for the purpose of marching to Vpier
Lehigb, to drive away the men tm
ploved there in loading coal for the
New Jersey Central KailroaJ. Tbe
i whole region is in a state oi great t -
citemeut, and tbe jreoplo leei mai
their property and lives are at the
n ercv of mobs of reckless men. I bw
is the third dav of these demonstra
tions. The Sheriff, Mr. Kirkendau-,
has declined to appear uules an. ac
tual riot takes place, and then he
proposes to come from ilkesbarre,
twentv-four miles distant, to quell it.
A deputv sheriff now here declines
to act without instructions. These
armed raiders are called "Lauder
buruV regiments, from tbe fact that
Mr. Lauderburn has been celling
condemned Government muskets.
Although our streets are quiet, etill
there is much concern manifested
by tur citizens generally, and the
result of all this raiding js, awaited
with interne anxiety. Unless the
rcsilessDCrS of the me a is soon quiet-:
ed it will undoubtedly be ucce-sdary ,
to ca!i upon the (Joveuor for protec
tion, inasmuch as our local police
force is too smell to conteud with a
large body ef exasperated and riotous
miners. La-t night, toCin , notices
were served on the men obtaiuing

T'.IE SHERIFF TAKES A HASP.
II A zi. Eton, March 31. 7:30 P. M.
Deputy Sheriff Ilhoades, with Lis
posse, has just arrived with lour
prisoners captured at Ebervale. The
mob was discovered near Drifton on
their return from the upper Lehigh,
when the sheriff advised tuem to
throw aw ay their arms, after- which
be. with his posse, proceeded on io
Ebervale and awaited tbe arrival of J
the rioters. Wishing to avoid anyj
unnecessary trouble, the sheriff sent
out a courier to warn them a second
time, aod threatening to arrest every
man found with arms on his persia.
Tbe miners were soon seen approach
ing, but without their gun?, having
oreviouslr secreted them ia the
i i.j
woods. Every man was Bearcneu as
he came in, the result being tbe ar
rest of the four men mentioned above,
who had pistols and biliies on their
persons. Since Fending tbe dispatch
announcing tbe killing of McDcrmot,
at I'pper Lehigh, it has beenjearned
that Lis death refciilied from an ac
cident. It is reported that an effort
was made to throw a passenger
traiu off the track to-day between
Veddo and Ebervale. There is also
a rumor that a crowd of miners are
crossing to-night from Schuylkill
county to make a raid on Audefireid,
Vorktown, Jeanesville etc.
