Look to Yot r S:iewai.k3. Judge Gordon, the Supreme Court of this State, decided at Erie, recently, that a municipal corporation is responsible for damage to pedestrians injured in consequence ol the accumulation of ice and snow on sidewalks. We look upon this as a most righteous decision. It is certainly the duty ot a municipality, through its chosen officials, to protect the property and lives of its citizens to the fullest possible extent. Old fire-traps, slippery pavements, and other things that endanger lite und prop erty should receive cstial attention at the hands of municipal authorities. It is but a small matter tor each individual to sweep In-fore his own door and keep his own pavement clean. Anil there is no telling how many accidents to life and limit you may prevent bv attending to Ibis small and sin'ipl. duiy. The recent decision of the tribunal in this commonwealth makes it incumbent upon the municipal power to sec that this matter of keeping the sidewalks clear for pedestrians is property attended to, it city and borough authorities do not desire to be mulcted into considerable sums of money for damages in case of accidents on account of neglect ed pavements. Keep your sidewalks clean '. The Old Story. It really Eetms that the numeruus exposures published from time to time iu regard to patent right swin dles fail to put our people, particularly farmers, on their guard. On tho2Gthof September last a chap calling himself Frank B. Gates (who il was subsequently ascertained passed un del several aliases, one being Frank Blinn) very shortly afterward had the note dis counted at the Washington Savings Bank. On bein; notified of this, Gantz made sat isfactory arrangements for pavment, and at the same time became convinced that he had been made the subject of a huge swin dle. He at once made ellorts to overhaul Gates, and notwithstanding traces were obtained of him in the State of Ohio, and that these tract were vigorously followed up by John H. Little, ot the Fulton House (who proffered assistance to Gantz.) no re liable information was obtained until Mon day last, when Mr. Little received a dis patch from Waynesburg to the effect that a man answering the description was then in that place. He married Miss Adeline Pat ton, of this town, and some twenty-four years ago made Brown County, Wiscon sin, bis home. Our older citizens all rt niemlier him as a man of ability, a genial, whole-souled gentleman. Yesterday morning an accident occur red at the "New Detmold" mineot the Maryland Coal Company, two or three miles west of Lonaconing, that was more terrible in its results than any we have been called upon to chronicle for many months. Like all the mines along George's creek, the entrance to this one is tar up the mountain side, and coal is loaded there and sent down an inclined railway, to the "dump house" at the railroad track, the w eight of the descending cars pulling the empty ones up the "plane. As at the other mines, the miners and others are in the habit of riding up and down between the "dump touse'' and the mint? entrance upon the cars. Yesterday mornlnc; two men and three boys got on two ol the loaded cars to ride to 'the l.Kt of ;he incline, but before the car started two ot tbe lads, wnose names! we did not learn, rot off the car and de cided to walk down the mountain, advising their companions to do the same. They declined to do so. however, saving that they preferred to ride, and in a few min iites the cars started on their downward journey. When a short distance from the starting point the drum at the top or tne incline, over which the wire rope hauling the cars is run, broke or gave way, and the two cars with their coal and living freight dashed over the rails at lightning speed, which the terrified passengers knew must in a tew moments terminate in de struction and death. With thisprospect before them it is not to be wondered that on nearing the foot of the incline, w hi'-h is upon high trcsuings. that one ot ibe men named Martin Sexton and a lad. son of Mr. William Douglas, sprang off ihe car. Mr. Svxton was nurieu over tne trest'.ing to the ground, and -vas shortly aiU-rwanl picked up insensible and serious ly injured. Young Douglas remained upon liic trestling, but was badly hurt. The cars then dashed into and through the dump house, and the other occupant of the car, Mr. Wm. Beanian, was thrown into the chute, and instantly killed, his throat bavtng been CUt by an fr-Ve uf the iron chute, and hi body terribly bruised. Mr. Sexum and voun DobcU were ! alive saat evening, but il i feared that tbe injuries of the former yrill proTelatal. I t'nwf-riaaa rtr. We understand a number of substantial improvement a,- proposed in and around this place the coming season. A .very common remark among the rwot In hereabouts last week wa that it was the coldest weather known within the recollectio n of the oldest inhabitant. Decidedly the best opening in the county is offered here, to a blacksmith. Chance open foronly a short time ; loca tion good and rent moderate. A srMBER of revival meetings have teen held here and in the sorrounding community during the present winter, and in a number r instance the efforts put forth to build up the kingdom of Zion proved abundantly successful. Silas J.'Coter. Esq, who purchased the stock of merchandise and fixtures ot Kiernan i Earl has taken possession of the same, and is doing a very fine business. The Messrs Ream, the new blacksmiths who recently come to our town, are meet ing wi'h good success. These men come to us w-ell recommended and are entitlel o a full share ol the public patronage. The school at this place is progressing finely under the careful management of Prop. II. II. Heckman. He seems to give entire satisfaction to both parents and pupils. Captain Bowman, of Stoystown, and Captain Harrison, of Someiset, paid our town a flying visit last week, the first one for several years. Come again, gentlemen. At the conference of the V. B. Church, held at Johustown, a few week ago. it was decided to return Rev. Bieghel to his work again tor the ensuing year. This gives general satisfaction to the people of his church in this community, who hope his ministerial labors the pns.-nt year may be pleasant and profitable to the pas ter and the people. Levi Whitf.zf.l. a blacksmith of this place, who left some time ago with the intention of visiting Johnstown and Pittsburgh for the purpose of replenishing his stock, and for some weeks thereafter no clue could be obtained ot his where abouts, has leen heard from, having turn ed up in West Virginia. No reason is assigned for his mysterious disappearance. A SLEic.HiXG party from Johnstown, with some of the finest " turnouts" we have seen fo some time, visited our place on Thursday last. MARRIED. The deceased was born in the State of New Jersey but came to this county about the year 1800, since which time he has been a citizen among us and highly re spected by all who knew him.
