When the threes cfa second reW

the fact that this man is again put

another indication that the old trea

soiitbtra Democracy.

The continued ascendency of the
Republican party was never more
necessary to the conntry than now.
The whole South is again in commo
tion, and the Democracy is almost
everywhere putting forth the doc
trine of repudiation. If that party
were to obtain a Majority iaCon-
press, practical rebellion in the
form
of Ku Kluxisrn would undoubtedly
rule the whole South ; the national
credit would be nearly destroyed;
the crisis of 1?T3 reuewed with teu-
j fold force, and the coumrj again
thrown into confusion and turmoil.
It is no time for taking chances ; suc
cess must be made certain.
The New York Journal of Com
merre, which bas always been a
Democratic paper, speaks thus of its
own party : A political organization
is judged by its leaders, and this is
why one of the great parties of this
country has fallen into such bad re
pute. The prominent wire pullers
or 'managers' of the Democratic par
ty have not shown common-sense
en , ugh during the past fifteen years
to set an a ward politicion. if it
were
a
all concentrated in a singli
and he were invested with it
head,
Thev
are worse than the old Boarbous,
who learned nothing and forgot
nothing, for they have lost sight of
i the remnants of a true faith whic h
clung to them, and have acquired
new and illustrious follies with ea ch
recurring season.
Tiiere is an unsettled and angry
feeling still prevailing at New Or
leans, which nothing but tbe pres
ence of Federal troops, and of vessels
ifwnrinthe harbor, prevents from
again breaking out into bloodshed.
The White Issues still preserve
their arms and their organization, are
daily drilled and recruited by their
leaders, and there is a general dread
of renewed violence. It is evident
that the Leagues do not propose to
give cp the conflict, and that while
they carefully abstain from coming
into contact with the National au
thorities they will strike at tho State
Government the first opportune mo
ment. They boldly declare that an
other conflict will ensue if any of
their leaders are prosecuted for trea
son, and they audaciously demand
virtual control of the approaching
election, so that they may place
their myrmidons in power, through
the instrumentality of tb9 ballot box.
At any hour between this and the
evening of the election we may bear
of another outbreak, and of more
bloodshed, if not in tbe city of New
Orleans, in the country parishes,
where there are no Federal troops to
protect Republicans in the exercise
of their civil rights.
The prompt and energetic action
of the President in suppressing the
insurrection in Ney Orleans meets
the heartv annroval of all eood citi-
11
zens. Later events 6how that if he
had hesitated or temporized not only
the State of Louisiana, but probably
all tbe States of the extreme South
would have again broken out in open
rebellion. The "White Leaguers"
an organization composed of the worst
remnants of the rebellion, and intend
ed to exterminate the negroes or re
duce thera again to a state of serf
dom were spreading fast throughout
the Southern States, and arming and
drilling for active warfare and so con
fident were they in numbers that they
undertook to depose the State and
local auihorities in Louisiana. Had
thev not been so promptly met by
Federal authority iu New Orleans,
we now iu all probability would have
j been iu the midst of auother war.
In the first exultation of apparent
I success, the old rebelious spirit flash
'ed out all over the South, and the
tone of manv of the Democratic
, of tLe North( clearIy 6nows
1 that as a parlv the I'emocracy as
iu the late rebellion stood ready to
i give aid and comfort to tbe insur
i j gents.
These occurrences must convince
all who choose to sec and reflect that
should the Democratic party, as at
present constituted and led, again re
gain control of the National Govern
ment, that not only would the late
war Lave been fourht in vain, but
that all the guarantees secured by
the amendments to the Constitution
would be disregarded There is no
safety for the Nation except in the
continued ascendency of the Repub
lican party.

if it i s- fearful for adults, what can
bet .ouht of it in the case of chjl
dre i ? Drankeness among children in
thw city is quite common now, and it
is growing with fearful raDidity. One
boy in Brooklyn died last week aged
fourteen. A post mortem examina
tion revealed the fact that "death had
been caused bv the continual and
excessive drinking of the vilest mm."
The medical testimony went to show
that the vital organs had been liter
ally" eaten awav-. that the liver was
in as shocking a state as if it had be
longed to a drunkard of fifty years
standing. Tbe mother of the deceas
ed boy stated to the coroner that he
arrived at that stage when he could
do nothing but drink. He had not
eaten any kind of solid food for a con
siderable time before death.
I saw, yesterday, from my win
dow, a boy and a girl not over twelve
years of age tbe girl could not Lave
been ten rolling along the sidewalk
now in tbe gutter, then in the mid
dle of the street, both in a state of
beastly intoxication. Ragged aud
dirty, unkempt and unwashed, their
faces blazing with the lurid light of
bell, thev wore the debauched look
of drunkards of long standing. : Of
course they will keep on as they
have begun, and will, in a very few
ye ars, go to graves in Potter's Field,
of delirium tremens. The terrible
thing in all this is its frequency. In
the lower part of the city there are
thousands oi these juvenile drunK
ards. and then there are enouch of
them in the upper part, in the good
residences. The common practice of
keeping liquors on side-boards, and
using them at the table, is bearing its
fruit The American child is too
nervous, too easily excited, to make
such indulgences safe. There is

TUE TRICKS OF THE GAMBLERS.
The fact that gambling is a regu
lar profession, and regularity follow
ed as a profession, is well known,
but the methods are not as well
known. I came across a circular,
the other day, of a dealer in what
are politely called "sporting goods,"
that throws some Utile light on the
subject.
lbe manufacturer proposes to sell
to whoever wants such poods "advan
tage and marked cards," which san
be read from tbe back as well as
from the faces, an advantage that i3
obvious, for the player who knows
the cards reads his opponent's hand
readily. Then this dealer-obliges bis
patrons with cards cut peculiar shapes
by which any kind of a hand can be
dealt For example, the bucts ot
these cards are marked to Bhow the
size in the right hand upper corner,
and the suit in the left. A certain
mark in the right band upper corner
shows tbe card to be a king, and a
certain mark on tbe opposite corner
shows it to be a spade. Which
brings gambling down to a tolerable
degree of certainty.
But this dealer dosn't stop with
cards. He makes dice that will
throw any number you choose; and
furthermore be will sell you machines
which you may conceal in your
sleeve, by the aid of which you may
"hold out" cards or play extra ones.
And that a young man shall have no
luck of facilities for being a scoundrel,
he sells, for the absurdly small som
of fifty cents, a book giving full and
explicit directions for usinjr all his
devices.
I mention these things for the pur
pose of warning impulsive youths
who are just commencing that there
is no such thing as honest gambling;
that men gamble to win, and that
there is but one end to gambling.
In one a-ay or another the hawks
will pluck the pigeons. The gambler
never plays a game of chance on
his side it is a certainty.
HOTELS IX THE CITY.
The people who are
' brought
New York a certain number
times each Year growl (and very
justlv) at tbe enormous bills that run
up a?ainst them at hotels. One can
not live at any first-class bouse on
less than $7 per day; and if one's
tastes are at all extravagant, the cost
will come very close to twice that
sum. The fault is not altogether
with the proprietors the owners of
the property have something to do
with it. The rents paid for these
hotels are simply fearfuL For in
stance, the Fifth Avenue rents for
$200,000, the owners paying tba tax
es, assessments and repairs. But we
must guard carefully against shed
ding any tears for tbeSe martyrs.
Despite the enormous rent, the les
sees manage, to skin the public so
that they clear $250,000 per annum.
The Windsor, a finer but smaller
hotel, pays a rental of $125,000; the
Gilsey $85,000; the St. Nicholas $95,
000; the Metropolitan $105,000; the
Hoffman $75,000, and the Brunswick
i $35,000. On this latter house $2.i0,-
000 was paid for improvements in
1873.
You see tho proprietors have to
make tbe people pay to pay their
rents and keep up the style that the
said people seem to demand. It is
estimated that it costs the proprietors
of the .St. Nicholas $100,000 per
annum to keep the bouse in repair
and make good the ware and tare of
furniture. But not w ithstanding all
this, the prices, are too high, and
there must be a brake before
long. Wealthy men can afford to
pay these rates (tbey don't like to),
but in the country merchant in mod
erate circumstances the matter of
hotel bills is a very serious one. A
merchant from Wisconsin cannot
come to New York for goods and get
home again without its costing bim
$200, which is two percent, on $10,-
000 uis probable purchases. It
a hole in his profits.

BUSINESS
has revived a little not mucb, but
enough to make us feel that life is
not entirely extinct; that people still
live, and that they have got to eat,
drink and wear. The great tea house

had never been so dull as duriug the
