The cele bration of tli a Hebrew New Year, began on Friday evening, and the festival contin ued until Tuesday evening. This is the most iuqioitaiit holiday occasion of the Israelites, and is the beginning of the re ligious year. All who live up to the rules of their faith cease from the pursuit of all secular business, and the synagogue is open Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The services were all iu the Hebrew tongue except the sermons, which were in tier man. There is a sacred obligation on every Hebrew to attend the New Year ser vices, and there are few who neglect. At the beginning of the services the ark of llu; covenant is placed Ix.-fore the people, and the scrolls containing the law are taken from it and the commandments read. The nxl of Aaron isnlso held up before the con gregations. All the services during this season are of a very impressive character. At Ibis time provision is made for the poor, all personal differences are settled, tint! contributions are made to charitable ob jects. The New Year will be followed by the Atonement and the Feast of the Tab ernacle. Tut: following item will dotihth'ss as tonish many of our readers, and we must confess it somewhat surprised us. "The sale of thoroughbred short horns at auction by the Hon. Samuel Campliell at New York Mills, near I'tica, Wednesday was the most notable event to stock rai-scrs that has ever occurred in this couutry. Buyers were present from Ktiroic and all parts of the l uited States. It is said that pure blooded short horns of the breed sold al Mr. Campbell's auction cannot I bought in England at any price. They can on ly Iw seen, while their owners refuse to part with them. There has not been a public sale of short h irns in Knglan l for twenty years. For this reason English men were on hand to purchase at Mr. Camplieli'ssalc. Mr. 1. I'avis of Glou cestershire, F.ngland, paid $4(l,fi(H) for a cow, the eighth Dutchess of Geneva. The calf of this cow was fold to Mr. Alexander ot Kentucky for $'7.KW. The soles of Wednesday amounted to Jf:ir0,0K). For the slock sold Mr. Cnmphell exju nded $'.'tX (H. leaving him a net pnitit of f 150,000. He has a goodly stock yet remaining. A.-rldrut. New Lkxingtos, I'a., Sept. 22, 'T:i. On Sunday night last, Sept. 21st, as Mr. John McMillen and Israel Gross, in com pany with four ladies, were returning home from church, they met with an acci dent while coining down the hill, opposite Jacob SchrockB residence. The night be ing very dark, thc horse missed the road run ning the wagon on a stump, the wagon iiu-! mediately upsetting, throwing the unfor tunate party among the rocks. The horses i taking immediate fright, ran with the wa gon on its side to the bottom of the hill where they made a sudden halt. On examination it was found that Mr. MeMillens marc had broken her leg. J. H. McMillen was immediately sent for, and his decision was to shoot her. The mare was valued at two hundred and fifty dol lars. Messrs. McMillen and Gross were hurt so bad as not to be able to walk. Only one of the ladies. Miss Futman, was hurt.
