Warden, Esq., of Susquehanna county, on the sub ject of license in Potter county. vill be read w ith interest at this time: Your favor making inquiry as to the re sult of the Temperance eilort in this coun ty was duly received. It gives me pleas tire to inform you that no license to sell in toxicaling drinks has la-en granted by our court since January 1852. This position was taken fifteen jears ago, by electing Associate Judges opjxwed to license. The names of the two Judires who had the principle and nerve to make this righteous decision, and to stand by it for ten years, arc Orange A. Lewis and Joseph Maun. No two men ever served the jx-ople more eneciuaiiy. in being a member of the legislature, 1 deemed it w ist? and just to put the oil repeated decision of the vo ters of this county, on this vital question, on the Statute Hook, and you may see, on page mS of the Pamphlet Laws of l'hfi'J. the prohibitory law of Potter county. The passage of this act excited the advix'ates of free drinking to great activity for its re xmI; but there it stands, a shield to all the youth of the county against the temptation to form drinking habits. And it will, un doubtedly remain a blessing to all and a comfort to nine tenths of the people; for. under its benign intlueiice, the number of tipplers is steadily decreasing, and fewer young nu n begin to drink than when li censed houses gave respectability to the habit. There are but few jieoplc who keep liquor in their houses for private use, and there is no indication that tlie number of them is increased since the traflic was i.ro hibited. HEADY j:roIU EMENT OF THE LAW. The law is as readily enforced as are the laws against gambling, licentiousness, and others of a similar character. In every in stance, the prosecution for sellinir liquor without license has Ix-cn successful when there was the proper pnxtf. There is, un questionably, greater difficulty in proving this oil'ense than many others" lx-cause the business of buying and selliii'' whiskey i contrary to law is more demoralizing than j uv onier criminal nanus. lie man w ho si lls, under such circumstances, expects the person who buys, in case of c Z : T"l" '". '? " " " " in tiiv li iii.iii in lill.liu the law of the State in order to gratify their appetites for strong drink, w ill not disappoint this exx-ctation. This humili ating fact, of itself, is stitlicieut to condemn the whole trallic. I know a g.xid many men that will tell the truth upon every siib'- ieet eveel.l tills on. ,!' Lni-in-r ..' whisky, as to which they wiil swea. as -ereiiely as a summer morning, that w hat ,h,.v ,i,t was - di. iii.'-." pr-pan-d ,,,! ,,r,.k,.r;i..l I.,. .t... I, . .... , -. . .i ,tj lllwz iipi toi. ji ii was not for the tenth man, whose con science is stronger than his aiietite. whom we have ahvai s lotind. it would Is- almost iiiiissi!jle to obtain proof against a man low enough to prostitute the practice of medicine to the sale of intoxicating drinks. ' Hut as lie fore mentioned, -the only difficul ty experienced in enforcing the law on that subject in this country has Ix-cn to secure the proof. Then' is no open violation of the law, and the consumption of strong iiuiiiv u:;s decreased materially in conse- I qiience of our prohibition of the trallic. Decidedly the best hotels ever maintained in the country have been ox-ned since li censes were refused, and there are now in Coudcrsport (our county seat) as good ho tel accommodations as are to be found in Norlhern Pennsylvania. The experience of this count y in conclusive that there is no shadow of ground for fearin-j any lack of gixsl hotels should license to sell liquor be w ithheld. Not a single interest of the country has s id'er.' 1 from our no license jxdicy. On the other hand, all the higher interests have been largely promoted. Crime of all grades have decreased, as is abundantly proved by the examination of the records of our criminal courts. And if we could shut out the inlluence of sur rounding counties, or convert them to our side, on this question, I do believe there would not 1m- business enough of that kind to induce any capable lawyer to accept the odice of District Attorney. It is, unfortun ately, true that there is considerable drink ing and drunkenness in this county; but with more than double the Kpulation, there is less than half the drunkenness that ex isted under the license system. Any intel ligent mm who will attend i-ourt in any place where the hotels have licens? to sell intoxicating drink w ill admit that our sys tem docs, unmistakably, lessen intemper ance and promote good order. As it is here on court week, so it is throughout the entire county the year round peace, pissl order, and prosjierity are, in a marked manner, promoted by our prohibition of tlie legal sale of strong drink. Fr t'e- II I II M.I.. TKJI I'HttMT., Teinperaiice is riulit. As soDii, now, as the weather is w arm enough all dead liees and litter should Ik? removed from the liottoni lioard and the condition of every stock ascertain ed. The matter removed irom the lxitbim iKiard should never Ixi thrown down on the ground in the npiary, but carefully remov ed nnd buried, since decaying nnd mould ering matter is just the soil ibr foul brood fungi to thrive and develop. The entrance should Ihj regulated to suit the numlx-r of liees Kissing, and positively no upward ventilation allowed, since a cur rent of air is fatal to bnxxl. In moveable comb hives the brood chamber should In; contracted by means of a division lioard, mid no more combs allowed than the lx-es can well cover. This wi'l economize warmth and leave combs perfectly protect ed. As fast ns the colony increases the si.e of the bnxxl chamber must be enlarg ed and comlis added, always placing the empty combs in centre of chamber. Early brcxxling should be stimulated by feeding unlxdted rye meal and honey. The latter should be warmed and given in small quantities except to colonies having but little honey; and such must be well supplied so that brixxling may go apace and the col ony increase for future usefulness. Hyp meal should Is; placed in shallow vessels near the apiary, in a warm shelter ed sx)t. whilst honey should be placed in a feeder aliovc the cluster, where n outside bees can scent it. The lx-ekeeix-r. who expects profit or pleasure from his little cts must make il a point to know the actual condition of all colonies at all times, and be perfectly wil ling and ready to supply all they may need.
