Having been induced by Ames to
invest in what appeared a fair trans
action, the Memiiers withdrew so soon
as it seemed likely to compromise
them or to involve them in litigation.
Up to that time there was no valid
reason why they should not own this

members own national bank stock,
which at any day they may be called
to legislate upon. There is not the
semblance of a case of bribery made

question whether the admissions of
Ames do not show on his part a se

in the future, legislation favorable to
his interests by improper means.
COVXTINU ELECTORAL VOTES.
The counting of the electoral votes

I the whole of yesterday's sessions,
day and evening. The Senate filed
into the House preceded by its Door

Vice President presided over the joint
body. No argument was permitted
in joint assemblage, but, when
objections were made or reso
lutions offered, the Senate filed
out of the House, and repaired to
its own chamber for argument
and consultation, and upon arriving
J at a conclusion returned to the Iioum.
