of doubtful curq, consequently, jieople

Not so now. Dr. Keyser, with Dr. Key

that consumption, like any other disease,
has its remedy. Not one or two siH.radic

TnE Orand Forest City Circus was the
means of attracting large crowds of peo
ple to this place. The canvass, though
not large, was well tilled, some seven or
eight hundred people were in attendance.
The showman were greatly delighted, ow

execution in his hands against the mana
gers for a little over three hundred dollars,
but the large attendance enabled theui to
cancel the debt and go on their way re

north of town, finding that the engine in
use -was not large enough to push their
business, have sold it and purchased a new

Joseph Cole, a laboring hnnd in the em
ploy of Wm C. Griffith, on the mill, came
very near losing his hand a few days ago
by carelessly handling a circular saw.

lkitr Herald: I notice that a corre
spondent of the Somerset lkiiiut.rat in giv
ing a graphic description of the town of
I'rsina, its surrounding prospects, Ac., de
scribes it as being situated 011 the lanks of
the Cassclman river. If that individual
upon ins next visit to lr:iia will pay a
little attention to the geography of the
country, he will find that the P."& V. It.
It. follows the Cassclman river until it
comes to a dividing ridgn called "Hog
Hack," which separates Kiid river from
"Laiirclhill creek." L'lmn arriving at the
aforesaid ridge he will learn that the rail
road passes from the lmnks of the Casscl
man river to those of Laurclhill creek by
means of an extensive " hole in the
ground" more commonly known as Brooks
tunnel. Alter oltscrving all tins, of the
beautiful and picturesque, he will find that
the town of I'rsina is situated upon the
"placid waters" of Laurclhill creek.
I was very much pleased w ith the letter
of said correspondent; yet I beg of him
not to locate our town upon the turbulent
waters of the Cassclman river, as my
mother always told me not to go near the
water until I knew how to swim.
Mac
Dtor Editor: I don't see Stanton's
town spoken of in your itaper. This lcau-
tiful town is situated on the banks of
Quemahoning creek, and consists of about
fourteen dwelling houses, seventy-five in
habitants, one grist mill, one saw mill, one
dry goods store, one shook shop, one plan
ing mill and sash factory, carried on by
J. H. Staid on an extensive scale. It is "a
great help to this community in furnishing
building material. Fears are entertained
that the shops will soon stop, as Mr. S.
has not lteen well since the Cincinnati con
vention, and last week he took a back set,
as did many others of the same political
profession.
This place was quite a scene of excite
ment last week one .lay. occasioned by the
rumor that the Hon." delegate of Somer
set would puss through thU place on his
way home from the Baltimore convention.
Accordingly all the Democrats gathered
together aliotit ten o'clock tosee and to ask
the Hon. gentleman nltout the convention.
But what disappointmentsthis world hath?
About a quarter past eleven the U. S. hack
made its appearance, liearing the Hon.
head of the party, hut it passed through
this place and never stopjied. The dele
gate was seated in a reclining position, ap
parently asleep, regaTH'ss of any Demo
crats in this town; byy his side a monster
wheel-barrow; they itmKpned they saw
on the side boards "of this push-buggy the
follow ing inscription: "Transiiortation for
all sott-headed Democrats over to Horace
Greeley free of charge." At this moment
they all disappeared and went to their hid
ing place?, from whence they returned in
a few days to discuss matter". It was then
the following was heard: "Must wc vote
for H. Greeley?" "Sosay ourparty leaders,
and they surely ought to know." "I have
come to the conclusion they can make us
do just what they please." "SupjKise we let
the party go to the d 1 and vote for U. S.
Grant" "No, we must stick to our party
as long as there is any rib left.'' "But they
keep us. swallowing so long and so many
things; why. we had to swallow the eman
cipation proclamation, the fourteenth and
fifteenth amendments, the lies the Kepub
licans heaped on us, for there was a little
truth mixed w ith them, and last but not
least, we have to swallow H. Greely, after
he has swallowed JefT Davis and the whole
confederacy. This is going to make a
mighty big swallow, and it smells so ni--gerish;
but we have a longtime to take this
dose Itetween this and Novcnilicr and
we'll take it if it kills lis politically."

aid in behalf of our suiTerin"; j "j le. In "iischaryin this duty, we will en
deavor to convey a faint idea of n. f i. ful calimity in as few wordd as pos
sible. About four o'clock p. m., on Thursday, ninth of May, a lire broke out
in the western part of the town ; a fierce wind was blowing at the time, and
all effort. to check the Sanies proved futile. In less than two hours this
once beautiful town was laid in a.-hei. The extent of ground over which
the destructive element raged i.s about thirty acres in the central part of the
town, including all the stores and hotels save one of each ; all the banks
and offices, including two printing office?, all plat es of business except pub
lic buildings. One-third in area of the solidly built, and nearly the entire
business part of the town is in ruins, and certainly three-fourths of the
wealth of the place is utterly destroyed. The fire raged with such relentless
fury that the terror-stricken jieople had to flee fur their lives, and consequent
ly but little of personal property was saved. Indeed, many escaped with
no other clothing than that upon their person at the time. To a large nutn
Imt of the sufferers it is a total loss of everv thing thev possessed, and thev
are left houseless and homeless, without a thing in the world and dependent
upon the public for bread. Others, upon whom the calamity is not so severe,
are greatly in need of aid to enable them to take another start in the battle
of life. The loss will not fall far short of a million of dollars, and the total
amount of insurance will not exceed one hundred thousand dollars.
Generous public, that in the past has responded so nobly to the cry for
help from foreign lands, and to the appeals of our own countrymen who have
suffered like direful calamities, we call upon vou in behalf of this suffering
but hopeful jieople FOIl AID SUBSTANTIAL AID. Your charities will
confer a lasting favor upon them, and we sincerely hope that in thw exercise
of your liberality and generosity, it will be like the quality of mercy, "not
strained, but twice blessed, blessing him that gives and him that takes."
