The coming Presidential election is the
principal theme of conversation. Ureeley
has a few advocates, but they are very
weak in their sentiments. , The Liberal
movement was gotten up by -a jiarty who
had Free Trade as their watchword, and
nominated Horace Greeley, whose life has
been devoted to the advocacy of Protection,
and who regarded Froe TraJk: pretty much
in the same light that he did Slavery and
jiolyguiny, as a "relic of barbarism."
Like Sumner and Trumbull, Greeley's
identity w ith the Liberal movement was a
iiersonal difference w ith the President con
cerning the distribution of the public patron
age. sseeln no other chance tor revenge.
with weeping eyes and broken heart, he
rushed into the anus of his rebel-Demo
cratic brethren, saying, "I know every
thingaliout farming." That his nomination
is repudiated bv the originators of the Lib
eral Convention is natural they could not
do otherwise. The chances of Greeley's
candidature now depend, upon another of
Ins relies of barbarism tjie Democratic
iwrty. This we opine, will mine to his
supisirt likewise, as the Free Traders have
done. Judge Thunnan, leader of the'
Democratic jmrty of litis State is op- j
Iioscd to the sale of the Democratic party j
to the liadicals. Sale of the Democratic !
liarty ! Put the thing up at auction, and !
it won't bring a pinch of snuff. Why, the
whole thing was trailed off at Cincinnati,
for a sore-headed, bolting ltepubliean, w ho
was as offensive 1 Democrats as hog meat
to Jews.
The Ohio State Convention, instead of
U'ing held at Columbus was voted to meet
in Cleveland. The circumstances which
caused tlie removal was this : a Cleveland
delegate said that he was authorized to offer
the Convention the best hall in their city,
free. That made the Columbus delegates
wink a little. He then taking advantage
of the ground gained, said that he would
also throw in the band of music free. At
this, a C-olumbus delegate got sea nil and
with tears in his eyes, begged the Conven
tion not lo forsake their city as the prece
dent would lie damaging. The Cleveland
man again came in, this time with a thousand-ton
steam hammer argument, and
said, "if the Convention would meet there
they would furnish all the whisky they
could drink, and it should not cost them a
cent." That sockdologer decided the mat
ter. I lielieve they would go to the ends
ot the earth it tree w lusty tloweii there.
In closing, 1 will say lhat the Liliend Re

cratic jmrty for the purpte of dividing the
ltepubliean party to its overthrow, is some
w hat analogous to Ihe coarse and freipicnt
