the Philadelphia and Erie arc to be supplied
with neat and elegant uniforms next mouth.
They are described as follows : Those of the
conductors will be double-breasted frock coats
of navy blue cloth, with twelve silver plated
buttons aud a monogram ou the lappel, with
the number abovo it, and to be kept buttoned all
the time w hile 'ii duty. The pants are to be of
the same material, likewise the cap, which will
have three silver cords around it, and the word
"Conductor"' embroidered in front with silver
braid. Watches are to be worn iu au outside
pocket.
The brakemen will be clothed in similar suits,
exceptant they will be double-breasted sack
coat, with silver buttons, and the caps will have
three cords around them.
Those of the traiu agents will be similar to
the brakemen, excepting that they will have no
pockets. Satchlcs will be horn by them, in
which they will deposit tickets aud money.
A crew of incu accoutercd in these uniforms
were recently presented before Geueral Manager
Frank Thomson, and he was so well pleased
with the appcaraucc they presented, that he im
mediately ordered the suits adopted. The cost
of each suit will be lifly dollars, and the first
will be famished ut the expense of the com
pany. Rockhill & Wilson will have the con
tract of furnishing them.
Death or Levi Seasholtz. We regret to
announce the death of one of our most esteem
ed citizens. Mr. Levi Scasholtz. He had taken
a heavy cold which turned Into typhoid pneu
monia, which caused his death yesterday (Thurs
day) afternoon. Mr. Se.-isholtz was a goo.1 citi
zen, and held many responsible positions. At the
time of his death he was employed as principal
clerk iu the lnterial Kevcuiic ollice of Capt. C.
J. Brunrr, which position he held for a number
of years. lie was honest aud upright ia all his
business transactions, lie was aged about 40
years.
Selling LiijI'or to Minors. A very sensible
law has becu proposed in the Legislature of tin;
State :
As every ouc knows, for a saloon keeper to
sell liquor to a minor is a criminal ofi'eiise, ren
dcrin the delinquent liable to be imprisoned.
Now, it is very obvious that cases could easily
arise wherein the saloon keeper might break the
law through ignorance. A would-be customer
of a suspiciously juvenile appearance enters aud
calls for this and that among the liquids. The
bartender may ask his age, but not anything
compels the youth to speak the truth ; he may
deceive that bartender and aver that lie is indeed
a man. It is sought to effect an alteration in
this, aud if the bill ollered becomes a law. the
miuor, whose inordinate thirst might otherwise
cause LI rn to deceive, w ill pause or else do so at
the risk of incurring the penalty inflicted by of
fended justice, viz.: fine or imprisonment. Mi
nors obtaining w ill be held cqtiallv guilt v with
saloon keepcis selling liquor, and this arrange
ment seems just and leasonahSc.

it is no use for them to advertise ; that they have
been in the place in business all their lives, and
everybody knows them. Such w-opli- forget to
tuke into consideration that our country is in
creasing in population nearly forty per cent,
every ten years, and uo matter how oid the place
may lie, there nre constant changes taking
place j some move to other parts, and strangers
fill their places. In this place of the world, un
less the name of a business firm is kept con
stantly before the public, some tiiiw firm may
stall up, ami by liberally advertising, in a very
short lime take the place of the older ones, and
the latter ru-t out, a it were, and lid forgotten.

lican State Convention met at Harrisburg ou
Wednesday last to choose delegates to the Na
ttonal Convention at Cincinnati. The delegates
were instructed to cast their vote in favor of
Governor J. F. Ilartranft for the Presidency.
This is a high compliment to the Executive of
the State, who, by his course, has endeared him
self to the people of the Commonwealth. The
Convention did its work promptly and ad
journed, lion. E. McPherson. of Adams, pre
sided over the Convention as permanent Chair
man. The platform is clear and explicit upon
the great questions which will enter into the
next canvass for President, nnd caunot fail to
meet the hearty endorsement of every Republi
can.

Chester County Mammoth Corn which yields
such large crops. Any person can get a sample
and prices, also sample copy of the American
Stock Jot iiNAL, (f 1 a year,) by sending six
cents to Potts Brothers, Parkeisbarg, Chester
county, Pa., and asking for them. Two hun
dred btish'-ls of corn to the acre is not produced
by ail seed.
Death of Josepu Bkioiit. Mr. Joseph Bright
of this place who had been confined to the houso
for over a year from that dreaded deseasc con
sumption, died on Tuesd iy night. lie was for
merly an engineer on the P. E. R. R., and was
au excellent mechanic and by his exemplary
character gained the esteem and friendship of
all the employees on the road, lie was about
forty years of age.
On Tuesday morning, W. A. Fisher, proprie
tor of the Miuei va restaurant iu this place, mil
greatly surprised en going to his .table and find
ing a fine colt by the side of his marc 'Kitty."
The ago of the mare (about "5 years) and posi
tively not knowing that sue was with foal, ii
sufficient reason to justify Mr. Fisher's great
astonishment. The colt was right smart until
Wednesday evening; when it became sick from
sonic cause and died during the night. A great
many persons had called to sec the centennial
visitor during the day, and it became much wor
ried and being yet weak probably died from ex

venture to give you u few items.
The works have resumed uow pretty generally
iu this section, and we trust they will continue.
Last week the men at the Stuartville colliery,
misunderstanding the e ouditlous under which
they were to resume, hesilated for a day hut
uflerwards started in ou last year's terms.
A man named Joliu Brilt was hurt there on
the very first day by a Tall of the top while
fastening u prop. His wouuds, however, are
not serious.
On Wednesday of last week the grammar
school closed, and on Thursday the high school,
bolh with very interesting and creditable exer
cises, which were largely attendetl. The tiiuo
was only six months owing to the scarcity of
inotiey as a result of the suspension.
Mrs. Kiley, whose houso was burned down
here short time ago, had botn the building aud
furniture insured.
Parties, which report says are cxcclleut ones,
are being held nt short intervals about town,
and all goes merry as a marriage bell.
Business seems lo.be reviving uuder the geuial
effect of resumption, aud pretty soon we hope to
have the same brisk little borough we had be
fore the suspension.
Mr. Elijah White succeeds J. Elliot Ross as
reporter of the Shatnokin Herald from this
place, and we wish him a pleasant time. He is
a youg man of ackuowlede-ed nbilitv. and will.
uo doubt, give satisfaction.
Prof. Reitmeyer, who was absent from town
on account of illness, has again returned hale
and h'-arty aud as genial as ever.

time has come w hen we must say adieu. Tne
shoit sojournment o! this society, as a delibera
tive body, though yet higher in its aim than
miiniciy, the mutual improvement of its mem
bership has been a source of great Improvement
as well as pleasure to the listener as well as par
taker, nnd we only hope the day lo which it bus
adjourned may then not be forgotten by those
enthusiast, whose voice was the organization,

manifested now. True this society had its
gloomy obstacle pre exhibited, with w hich it
had to contend from time to time. The journal,
with its host of ready contributors and zealous
editor, was at limes rigid In accusing the guilty
wrongs with which our little town has at times
to contend with ; but we hope its endeavors were
all for the good ; for to this we can only add,
we hope the day is not far distant when this
town may be blessed with a journal mightier
