ADd lis prswtit.-nl knowledges is worth much

bird, rather larger than pigeons, soli for
75 cent each in April and Mav, giving n.
dollnr per couplo char profit, is funking
money fast enough losnlisfv resonable ueo-
ple. The wny to do it is to havo the hens
nil comfortably lodged in ft warm roost by
me i8i oi oauunry.
Have some nice, snug, warmly situated
nests in a place uuitr the roost for the liens
to inv in, aud etiutrivo that they can go to
una irom without guttii into t tie tmu wen

nnd if Jlralmm blood is in them (hnlf will
do) they will sit by the cud of the month ;
nuer nnicning, put thorn in coops winch
can be closed and made dark by fastening
lip ft fioiit board then in bad weather the
chickons can be fed by letting down the
board, and lie shut up again ns soon as
they have eaten, which will cause the hen
to sit ?tid nnd nurso them till thry are fad
sgniu ; have no bottoms to tho coops nnd
move every ci ty, putt in a flrv line straw or
any kiud of litter under the coop when the
ground is wet, but hi moderate weather or
whenever dry let them he on the sod. Keep
me nen common tin mo chli-lt ne are ft
mouth old, unless unusually mild, nnd let
thesis coops be on n slope racing the south,
nnd away from the haunts of the old fowls
There are ninny days in February when
the chickens will run around the coop pick
ing up blades of grass. &c, enfoving the
sunshine, which puts l hem in siioiig health
and clear confinement in cold s pells and
during snow florins, which. With these
coops, do not hurt them at nl! ; nnd there
will bo no dropping wings and no - crying,
ns there invariably is when little chickens
nre raised in glass hot-houses or in nny
kind of houses or barns ; for in any of these
places they miss the fresh ground to be
daily moved on, and the fresh nir mid sun
shine which gives them au nppeti'.o out-of-doors,
however spacious the apartments
may be. I have had to dig tlio snow nvrny
from tho coops several times in one season,
nnd brush places for them to be placed on,
which is quickly done by having n spare
coop and going from one"to the other with
n basket ; and by 10 or 11 o'clock the whole
of tho bro jds from 10'to 40 coops would be
seen as brisk ns bees, a dozen or more at
each coop, and raoing to meet tha feeder.
The feed requires variation nud should
be giveu every two or thrca hours say one
day scalded meal at 7 wheat or barley at
it cracked com nt 12 liver or other incut
chopped line, nt 2 nnd bread sopped in
milk with oats or an' dry grain, at !, nnd
then shut them up. 2sext day, egg bliells
broken tine mixed with the morning's first
meal, nnd give ono feed of some kind of
sprouted grain in about such a siage as
malt is made, nnd vary this feeding us con
venient, and ns tlm chickens seem to pre
fer one form to another ; for generally what
they like best is best for them, as nature
seldom gives desire for that which is not
pond and in case of anythiug being too
rich, it will cloy them till the system re
quires more. Count n Ucnl'cmun.
FliESn Eggs. The way to have fresh
eggs at all seasons of the year, and the. only
way I know if, is to have a breed of hens
that will lay in the winter as well as in the
summer, lu order to accomplish this 1.
Get the hens. 2. Keep them welt;give tlu in
ft variety of food pounded bone in the win
ter to take the place of gravel in tho sum
mer. 3. Give l hem warm ronsiing places;
alien tliHt is kept poor nnd froze every
nii'lit, will not lay an egs? next day.- A good
J'.ru iq. !ik n gristmill; if we expect bin
grists, we must till the hopper. 4 Hat :h
out early pullets lo lay in ihe fa;l while the
old hens are mniiliiiig. asth'-y will stop lay
ing for a few days during this process, and
keep mostly pullets over winter, as they will
lay more eggs the lirst year than the second
year, nnd soon, There is scarcely a day in
the whole year that I do not bring fresh eggs
from the barn to the house.
