Colo Weather. The woather on Wednesday
and Thursday last was very cold, tontlderin that

Minister Called. The congregation f the
Presbyterian Churob, of this place, bare oalled Rev.
Orr Lawson, of Blair eounty, at a salary of $1,201 a
year. The roverend gentleman has aceepted the
oall, and preached in the oburch on Sunday last.
New Post OrrtcB A new Post Ofljeo has bcon
established on the Northern Central Railroad, north
of Clark's Ferry, and about four miles this side of
Halifax, to be called Powoll's Creek Post Offloe, and
Mr. J. 0. Westfiillliaa been appointed Post Master.
Ocb coal operators, at this place, stopped shipping
by eanal last week. The amount of coal shipped
from the wharves at Sunbury, during the season, is
about 70,000 tons. This amount was earned in about
one thousand boats, which were towed over the river.

TBRoran Sitmbury. Three officers, from Pottsville,
passed thr ,iujh this place on the 4 id afternoon train,
on Tuesday last, having in charge three villainous
looking men, who wero arrestee, in Schuylkill county
ou a cbargo of having murdered Ales. W. Ilea, su
perintendent of a colliery near Ccntrulia, Columbia
county, on tho 17th of October lait. Tbe prisoners
wjro hoaiily ironed, and were being taken to
Bloomtburg, where they will bo tried.
Abiiest i oa Hurglarv. A man named Seattle
and a Mr. and Mis. Black were rcoeully arrested in
Philadelphia, on tfie charge of being concerned in
tbe robbery of the Mors of Wra. Hciucn A Son, nt
Milton, some tinue since. A IM o? Velvet ribbons,
identified as rrl nf the goo Is stolen, wero found in
the trunk of Mrs. Black, at her boarding house in
Lewisburg. The parties arrested were teen in Mil
ton about the t!m of tht robbery, whioh,. in connec
tion with the Boding of the ribbons Iu the woman 't
trunk, form pretty ttrong grounds for euspoeting I
tbom of being the guilty parties.
Appointeo to A Nkw Position. We art pleated
to learn that our friend, Q. B. Bulkley, Esq., has
Leen appointed to a position in tbe engineering de
partment on the Baltimore A Potomac P.ailioad, a
new road, extending from Baltimore to a point be
low Acquis Creek, in Virginia. Mr. Bulklcy was
formerly oonnected with tho Widdlocreek Valley
road, und recently Tvilh the new road now in pro
gress between Eunbury and Hailoton. While wo
regret parting with bim, we congratulate him upon
his appointment to a lucrative and responsible posi
tion. The officers of th nw road wero fortunate in
securing tbe services of to abis and txptrienced an
engineer.

Mom AtiirttTS. Qoorge Leblg, who yt he is
from Altoona, Pa,, was arrested at ihe depot, in this
plaot, on Totals last, by Bamuel Heilner, a detes
tive, on a charge of robbery. Th ohargtj was pre
ferred by M. L. Fisher, proprietor of the Junction
Hotel, at tho railroad droning, In Third street, where
Leblg pot np on Monday Bight, telling Mr. Fisher
that he was engaged In selling and putting on a new
patent window-fastener. During the night Leblg
broke into a bureau belonging to Mr. Fisher, and
stole $61 In greenbacks, $2 in silver, and SI pennies.
Upon the detective arresting him at the depot, the
prisoner, who had the money tied up in a oloth and
ooncealed on bit person, threw it away, but tht de
tective toning tht operation recovered it. He was
taken before fisquirt Btard, who oommilted him to
jail. lit It tvidontly on old offender. -
On Wednesday morning lost Jaoob Wootnef, wbo
is employed at the jail, arrested a young man named
Jesse Barnhart, wbo, it will be rtmebered, tscaptd
from our county prison about four months ago, along
with a prisoner named John O. Williams. Barnbart
was inctroerntet! at tht time for assault and battery,
and remained in JaiJ about two months, when he
made his escape. Sheriff Hockley offered a reward
of $20 fjr the re-arrest of Barnhart nnd $40 for
Williams. Barnbart, Tioi&ring that a doUotire was
on bis track, tame to town on Wednesday for the
purpose of trying to havo bis obso fettled, and was
very proporly "uabbud" by Vi'oomer. lie Is now
confined iu a cell and hastily ironed, and stands
every chance of getting tho full penalties of the law
inflioted upon liini, which ho so richly deserves.
Shootiso or Another Robber Uis Death.
On Tuesday morning last, ubout two o'clock, Mr.
Abram H. Kline, jewolur, of Pinegrove, was awak
ened by the noise of men nttomptluft to force tht
shutter of a window of hit shop. He jumped up and
seized a loaded iuskcl he was formerly a soldior
and went into his shop, where he saw that an attempt
was being made by burglars to rob it. He ran out or
Ihe back door and round tbo house. As soon as tho
burglars saw him they ran. He fired at.the rerout
ing robbers'and hit one in the back, the ball passing
tbrough bis body. Tho robber fell, but was enabled
by the assistance of bis confederate to get up and off.
Thoy managed to got about ton miles from PinejroTe
in the direction of Lykons' Valley, when the wound
ed man went into a shanty on a mountain, where bis
father came for him with a wagon to take him to his
homo in the Valley. But, ht died 'before reaching
home and wot bnried on Tuesday last. It ui3
that the name of the twe men who are inulattoes
and brothers is Anty, and that they came about
thirty ruiles to perpetrate this robbery. The survi
ving hrther has been arrested by officer B. II. Clau
ter, and yesterday morning ho was brought to Potts
ville aud committed to pri.on. Mimes' Journal,

Death or James I'inlet. Our readers will re
member the shooting of James Finley by officer
Clauser, while Finley with a gang of highway rob
bers had wnylaid nnd war attempting to rob and
possibly murder Major J. C. White Finley was
brought to Pottsvillciud lodged in prison, where be
died on Sunday night last from tho effects of his
wounds. An Inquest was held on Tuesday by Deputy-Coroner
Conrad, and after tbo 'facts connected
with the shouting had been hoard, the jury rendered
the fallowing verdict : '-That the said James Finley
came to his death from a pistol sliut at tho bauds of
Simon H. Clauser, n police officer, while said Clauser
was in tbo discharge of his official duties, and that
we exonerate hiiii from nll.ll.iuio."
The body uf Finley was interred on Tuesday after
noon last in thenew Cemetery cf St. Patrick's Catho

Miitonian says thiit It. U. Cook and A. Pardee,
Rrqrs., comprising the firm of Cook A Pardee, are
running their large mill at Watroniown to its full
capacity, and the same gentlemen, under tho firm
name of Purdce A Cook, are dealing extensively In
lumber at Lock Haven and V.llliaij'jport. Their
business agent nt Watsnntown, Mr. Austin Etull,
manages their uffairs at the latter plnoe in a highly
satisfactory manner, and Mr. It. i. Cook gives his

of Cre was sounded on Sundny morning, Mr. Frank
Riehel, who resided on William street, near where
tho fire took place, Vent to the window to look out,
being, at first, under tho impression that bis own
house was on fire. After looking a few moments ho
turned round, and had only moved a short distance
from the window when bo fell dend. Ho was, ap
parently, in good health, w'hh the exception of an
occasional touch of something like heart direase,
which he bad oemplainod of at Intervals. He leaves
a wife and two cljildien.

Mr.. Runner, of tho New York Ledger, has suc
ceeded in making even a Prospectus that is read
able. It is one of the most interesting of the new
advtrtisements in our presort number. Frcm it wo
learn that Rev. Dr. Tyng is writing a long story for
tho Ledger.
Another Fire at Lock Haven. Lock Havon
was visited by another destructive ro on Thursday
evening of last week. Five or six buildings, on
Urove street, woro destroyed. The loss amounts to
about $40,000, which is mostly covered by insurance.
