1 II HIS t.ANT WOltllSi.
"ahii.noion, Sept. 5, 1802. The same
hour that Ceneral Stevens was killed in
bat'dc, a number of prominent gentlemen,
lilling inllucntinl positions, were in consul
tation iu this city and in other part? of the
country, with n view of having him assigned
to the "command of the Army of Virginia.
Successive manifestations of incapacity du
ring a yenr of wnr linve catiBcd thinking
men to cast iibout for n lender. These
gentlemen hud lixed upon Oeueral Istiac I.
Stevens n the man. His splendid conduct
in the battles of Friday and Saturday had
ju t directed attention" to him ; it was re
membered that in pure capacity he had
always been first, having taken the honors
nt West Point with scarcely an effort, and
though old political enemies, these men
resolved to ask that he be given n leading
command. AYhile they were consulting he
led on his men und fell.
The importance of the engagement on
Monday night, which lost to the country
Kearney and Stevens, has not been generally
understuoel. The truth is, it was not a mere
cpisoilc made noteworthy by the death of
two such lenders, but n crisis where nothing
but decision und sacrifice on the part of
those leaders availed to prevent disaster.
The army was retreating from Centreville.
The battle was fought against a rebel force
that had penetrated tivc miles nearer Wash
ington than our rear, and was moving to
strike' upon the flunk. General Stevens'
Division, the advance of lieno's corps, was
on the left of the road taken by the trains,
nnd intercepted the enemy. He saw that
the llebcls must be beaten back at once, or
during the night they would stampede the
wagons, nnd probably so disconcert our
retreat that the Inst divisions would fall a
prey to their main force. He decided to
attack immediately, at the .-attic time sending
back for support.
Having made his dispositions, he led the
attack on foot at the head of the Seventy
ninth t Highlanders!. Soon meeting a w ith
ering lire, and the Color Sergeant, Sandy
Campbell, a gri..led old Scotchman, being
wounded they faltered. One of the color
guard took up the flag, when the Cii-neral
snatched il from him. The wounded High
lander nt his feet cried "For. God's sake.
General, don't take the colors; they'll
shoot you if you do !" The answ er was
"Give me the colors! If they don't follow
now, they Vi-ver will;" and he .sprang
forward crying : "Wc are all Highlanders
follow, Highlanders! Forward, imj High
landers 1" The Highlanders did follow their
Si-olii-h chief, but while sweeping forward
a ball struck him on his right temple. He
died instantly. An hour afterward, when
taken up, his hands were still clenched
around the flag stall".
A moment after seizing the colors, his
son, Captain Ilay.ard Stevens fell wounded,
ami cried to his father that he was hurt.
With but a glance back, that Itoinan father
said: "1 can't attend to you now. lla.zard.
Corporol Thompson, see to my boy.'"
The language 1 have given as General
Stevens' was taken dow n upon the Held by
a member of his stall', lie had often re
marked that il it were his fate to fall in
bat lie. he hoped he should be shot through
the temple- and die instantly. (.'r. A'. )'.
