KITTEN GOSSIP.
BY t. WKSTWOOD.
Kitten, kitten, two months old,
Wooly enow ball, lyinn rnng,
Cnrl'd up in the warmest fold
Of the warm hearth nip, "
' Turn yonr drowsy head this way.
What is life T Oh, Kitten, say I
"Life f ' said the Kitten, winking her eyes,
And twitching her tail in a droll surprise
"Life f Oh, it's racing over the floor,
Out at the window and in at the door j
Now on the chair back, now on the table
'Mid balls of cotton and skeins of silk
And crumbs of sugar and jugs of milk,
AH so cosy and comfortable
It's pattinsr the little doe's ears, and leanintr
Round him and o'er him while he's sleeping
waning mm up in a sore ntlnglit,
Then off and away, like a flush of light,
Scouring and scampering out of sight.
Life? Oh, its rolling over and over
un tne summer-green turf ana budding
clover;
Chasing the shadows as fust as they run,
Down the garden paths in the mid-ilay sun,
Prancing and gambolling, brave and' bold,
Climbing the tree stems, scratching the
mould.
"That's IAf el" said the Kitten two months
old.
Kitten, Kitten, come sit on my knee,
And lithe and listen, Kitten to nic 1
One by one, oh 1 ono by one,
The slv, swift shadows sweep over the sua
Daylight dietb, and kitten-hood's done.
And, Kitten, oh I the rain and the wind I
For cat-hood cometh, with careful mind,
And ornvn rat-ilnties follow behiud.
Hark I there's a sound you canHot hear j
I'll whisper its meaning in your ear i
Mice!
(Tho Kitten stared with her great green
eyes, .
And twitched her tail in a queer surprise,)
Mice I
No more lit bits, dainty and nice j
No more mischief and no more play j
Hut watching by liight and sleeping by day,
Prowling wherever the foe doth lurk
Very short commons and very sharp work.
And, Kitten, oh ! the hail and the thunder !
That's a bluckish cloud, but ablacker's under
Hark I but you'll fall from my knee, I fear,
When I whisper that awful word in your car
R-r-r-rats I
SThe Kitten's heart beat with great pit-pats,
Jut her whisker quiver'd, and from their
sheath
Flashed out the sharp, white, pearly teeth.)
R-r-r-rats I
The scorn of dogs, but tho terror of rats ;
The cruellest foes and the fiercest fighters j
The sauciest thieves and tho sharpest biters,
But Kitten, I see you've a stoutish heart,
So, courage I and play an honest part ;
Use well yonr paws,
And strengthen yonr claws,
Aud sharpen your teeth and stretch your
iaws
Then woo to the tribes of pickers and stealers,'
kibblers, and gnawers, and evil dealers I
But now that you know Life's not precisely
The thing you fancy pictured so nicely,
Oil' and away! roco over the floor,
Out of the window and in at the door;
Boll on the turf and bask in the sun,
Ere night time cometh, and kittenhood's done.

CIIAKCOAL ANU SALT FOR SWINE.
Mr. Fbeas : One of tho best things in
the world for store hogs, is common charcoal.
Salt anil brimstone are also of great bene
fit. We do not however wish to bo under
stood as saying that these articles should be
kept constantly by them, or introduced daily
into their food. The first is necessary to
correct the bad tendency of certain kinds of
aliment, and should be supplied in quantities,
varying from a quart to two quarts, as often
as onto or twice a week. Salt should be
more frequently givou, but in smaller quan
tities. Whim not applied as a seasoning in
their swill, it should be kept constantly in
their troughs. Brimstone should bo admin
istered iu their mush, or in dough, say one
roll per month, or half a roll every other
week. By attending to theso regulations, we
shall escape many unpleasant contingencies,
and preserve our animals in a thrifty and
growing condition, and in the retention of
perfect health. W.

crops, very, large, and with an extended
knowledge of this fact, the cultivation of it

requires to be rich, deep, and somewhat moist.
Itie rows should be 30 inches apart, and the
plants not less than 24 or 26 inches. The
two best varieties for field cultivation are the
Drumhead aud the York. .
The Necessity ok Prouoht, axd its Bene

Maryland, Mr. Higgins, publishes a poper,
knowing the necessity of having droughts to
replenish the soil with mineral substances,
carried off to the sea by the rains and also
taken up by the crops, and not returned by
manure. These two causes, always in opera

Dear fir: I received more than a year ago
a copy ol "l.red.s Pleaders Assistant unproved
by Judge Jordan and others. I examined it with
some care soon afterwards, and have had occs
sion to use it several times since. I think it de
cidedly valuable as a tnnnuel for practising
attorneys in Pennsylvania, and do not hesitate
to recommend it If it were generally used it
would increase tho accuracy of tho profession in
matters wiucn are oltcn very carelessly done.
I am very truly yours, &c.,
J. 8. BLACK.
I also received a copv of the Pleaders' Assist.
ant, and have examined it lufHciently to enable
me to concur very heartily in the above eomnicn-
tlutions by the Chief Justice.
