Poit give an account of frightful accident
which occurred oh Ilia Panama Railroad.
When wilhin one mile of Barbaeoaee, at
(ha ttain was panaing around a sharp curve,
bullock got upon the track, and although
the train waa going very alovvly, the animal
wai discovered too late lo (top it motion. -The
tender was thrown of the hack just as
the locomotive had passod ntmrly over a
bridge acroM one of those frightful ravines
which abound along the Clnigrea liver. The
tender in its demount displaced some uf the
timbers on which the bridge and hack le-tt'il,
letiinjj the whole superstiucturo, locomotive)
thiee baijuaga and two passuugtfr care into
the abyss below. The train consisted of one
car with the mails, two with luggage, and
nine passenger cars, besides the locomotive,
containing over COO peisons. It wan quite
dark when the accident occurred ; and the
locomotive went crashing down into the
yawning abyss, followed, in quick succes
sion, by five cars two of which were crowd
ed to their utmost capacity wi:b men, vt,
men and children. To the astonishment of
all, only one pprson was killed, and one
other has since died of his injuries.

The principal mammoth trees of Calaveras
county, Cal., are named as follows, and are
cf the annexed dimensions: the big tree
(cut down) 249 feet in length ; "Father Pine,"
longth 400 feel, circumference 110 feet, this
tree S50 feet from tho ground, is no less than
12 feet in diameter; "Three Sisters," a clus
ter, together are 92 feet in circumference,
and 500 feet in height, tho cotilre one is bare
of branches 200 feet above the ground ; "Mo.
ther Tree," 91 i feet in circumference, 323
feet high; "Mother and Son," united at the
base, 92 feet in circumference, 300 feet h'gh ;
''Twin Sisters." 100 feet in circumferencei
300 feet bigh; "Pioneer's Cabin," 85 feet in
circumference, 200 feet high ; ' Siamese
Twins," 90 feet in ciicumference, 323 feet
high , ' Guardian of Times," 85 feet in cir
cumference, 825 feet high ; "L'uclo Tom'a
Cabin," 94 feet in circumference, 300 feet
high ; "Pi iJe of the Forest," 87 feet in cir

are all embraced in an area, not exceeding
one half mile in extent.

cent lectures at Cincinnati, Gavazzi said,

Th Jafah Expedition. -By the latest
mail from China we have intelligence that
the Uni'ed States squadion, under Commo
dore ferry, arrived at Japan on the 8th of
July, and was kindly received by tho inhabi
tanls. Negotiations, however, had beett post
poned till Ihe spring, and the squadron sailed
from Japan on the 21st ef July.

Draughting, Construction of Maps, Use of
Compass, &c, will be taught to students in Sur
veying and Civil Engineering.
Lessons in Music, Drawing, Oil Painting,
Water Colors, &c, Ornamental Needle Work,
French and Dotanv will be given by the Precep
tress, who is a graduate of Cnstleton Female
Seminary, Vermont, and comes rccommcmUd
by the Principal of that Institution, as "a young
l:uiy of agreeable, manners and high literary at
tainments."
Young ladies and gentlemen who design to
become teachers, will find this Institution an effi
cient school for preparation, since there will be
connected with it, during the great part of tho
year, a Tkaiiikhs' Isstitctf., the members of
w hich will have the opportunity of attending an
Evening Couisc of Lectures on School Teaching,
and acquiring a practical knowledge of the art,
under the supervision of the Principals.
The government of the school is based upon
tho law of universal love, which enjoins upon all
to do to others as they would think it right that
others should do to them. Hence the rules will
be mildly, though strictly enforced ; and parents
and guardians may rest assured, that the morals,
habits of study, and general deportment of the
students will be carefully attended to.
The building is now undergoing a complete
renovation. It will be painted, furnished with
new deskB, a bell, convenient recitation rooms, Ac.
MiHlinbuvg is a thriving and healthy borough.
Its inhabitants are moral, intelligent and enter
prising. Its streets have been recently graded
nnd paved. It is, in every respect, a pleasant
and desirable retreat for students. We, therefore,
trust that the friends of education will deem the
Academy worthy of their liberal support.

2,500 Acres Timber Land
. FOR SALE.
SEVERAL VALUABLE TRACTS OF
TIMBER LAND, comprising about S.ftOO
acres, part of which is situated on Tohyhenna
Creek, and part on Muddy Creek, within three
miles of Lehigh River, in Prnn forest township,
Carbon County, one of the great Coal Counties
of Pennsylvania, can be had at a bargain, if ap
plication be made soon.
These lands are thickly covered with the best
timber of that region. While it is believed that
73,000 feet of lumber to the acre, can lie rut from
a large portion of the bind, the balance will aver
age not much less than this figure. The kinds of
timber found on the land are Hemlock, Spruce or
While Cedar, White Oak, White Pine and
Chestnut but principally made up of White
Pine and Hemlock.
The Tnbyhanna and Muddy Creeks are large
and rapid streams, yielding a vast amount of
water power, and are cnpahlo of driving a large
number of sow mills. They empty into the Lehigh,
which stream, with the Lehigh Canul aflbids an
outlet to the most desirable lumber markets.
There is, too, under contemplation, a railway
leading to the cities of New York and Philadelphia
which runs within one mile anil tlire quarter of
the land. Through these avenues lumber can be
delivered ill either of the cities named, for about
$7 per thousand feet thus enabling persons en
gaged in the trade to derive greiter profits than
attend investments generally.
In addition to tho timber, convertible into eve
ry shape of lumber, there is much that will an
swer for spars of vessels a sort of timber that
ship builders have been obliged to purchase in
Maine, or at other distant points.
Unlike most of the lands on the Lehigh there
hos, as yet, been no culling of the timber on this
property. It stands undisturbed by the wood
man's "axe. It is, therefore, the more valuable.
The lumber trade of the Lehigh has been carried
on to such an extent for years past, that a scarcity
of good timber is beginning to be felt. Every
season necessarily increases this difficulty. The
eonseqneiicc must be an encbamenicnt of the
value of timber lands. Those nn-eulled tracts
with the advantage of avenues to market, such
as the lands ofi'ered for sale, possess, cannot fail
to be the sources of supply hereafter.
But the land is not alone valuable for the tim
ber it contains. It is of good quality for farming,
nearly every acre being susceptible of a high
slate of cultivation.
Capitalists desiring to make investments, would
do well to turn their attention to these lands. For
