BT CHARtB SWAIN.
Let to-morrow take) care of to-morrow;
Leave things of the future to fate ,
What't the use to anticipate .
Life's troubles come never loo late t
II to hope over much be an error, .
Tis one that the wise have preferred ;
And how often have hearts been in terror
Of evils that never oocuired .
Have faith--and thy faith shall sustain thee
Permit not suspicion and care '
With invisible bonds to enchain thee,
But bear what God gives thee to bear.
Tt.. u:. .nin't minnorted and eladdened,
" Be ne'er by "torebodifiKs" deterred :
But think of how hearts have been saddened
By fear of what never occurred I
Let to-morrow take care of to-morrow; .
Short and dark as our life may appear,
We mv make it still darker by sorrow
Still shorter by folly and fear I
Half our troubles are half our invention ;
And often from blessings conferred
Have we shrunk iti the wile apprehension
Of evils that never occurred !

THEATRICAL REMINISCENCE.
Who does not recollect Billy Williams, the
Comedian, familiarly known as Billy of the
Wells, which latter cognomen he derived
from bavins been connected for several years
with the Sellers Wells Theatre, London.
Billy -was one of the best natured men alive,
and, without a very brilliant education, he
was an actor; it is true that he sometimes
gave Lindley Murray a wide berth when
using his own language instead of that of an
author. We shall never forget a conversa.
tion which we overheard between Billy and
W. E. Burton, at Windusl's. Billy sat in his
usual seat, and was endeavoring to make
himself agreeable to those around him.
Burton, who delighted in quizzing Billy,
made some enquiries of him relative to a
horse belonging to Mr. Hamblin, which
seemed to arouse Billy, and he thus com
menced his reply :
"Now, Burton, I'll tell you all about that
'orse ; you see, when 1 first arrived, I said to
'Amblin, 'Tom, I wants an 'orse ; I've al
ways been used to 'ave an 'orse, and I would
like to 'ave one.'
"'Billy,' says be, 'yon know Mazeppa; he
has earned me a great deal of money, and 1
will not permit him to be misused, but if you
want to ride him you may, and my stage
manager, Tom Flynn, will go with you to the
stable.'
"So down I goes to the stable with Tom
Flynn, and told the man to put the saddle on
him."
"On Tom Flynn T" says Burton.
"No. on the 'orse. So after talkinc with
Tom Flynn awhile, I mounted him.'
"What, mounted Tom Flynn 1"
, "No, the 'orse ; and then I shook hands
with him, and rode off."
"Shook hands with the horse, Billy V
"No. damn it, with Tom Flynn ; and then
I rode off up the Boweryt and who should I
meet in front of the Bowery Theatre but Tom
'Amblin, so I got off and told the Ijoy to hold
him by the head."
"What! hold Hamblin by the head!"
"No, the 'orse, and then we went in and
'ad a drink together."
"What! you and the horse V
"No, me and 'Amblin ; and after that I
mounted him airain and went out of town."
"What! mounted Hamblin again 1"
' "Nn. the 'orse : and when I cot out to
i . i
Burnham's, who should be there but Tom
Flynnn he'd taken another 'orse and rode
out ahead of me. so I told the 'os'.ler to tie
him up "
"Tie Tom Flynn up!"
"No, damn it, the 'orse, and we had
drink there."
"What ! you and the horse !"
"No, me and Tom Flynn. Now look here,
Burton, every time I say 'orse you say 'Amb
lin, and every lime I say 'Amblin, you say
'orse. Now I'll be 'anged if I tell you any
thing about it."
Billy felt his dignity insulted, and no coax
ing on the part of Burton could induce him
to finish the recital. AT. Y. Sunday Dispatch.
Phenomena Attendant on Immersing
the Hands in Molten Metal. Mr. Corne,
in a paper submitted to the Paris Academy
of Science, says :
"Having determined on investigating the
question whether the employment ol liquid
sulphurous acid for moistening the hands
would produce a sensation of coldness, when
they are immersed in the melted metal, I
immersed my hands, previously moistened
with sulphurous acid, in the metal lead, and
experienced a sensation of decided cold. I
repeated the experiment of immersing the
hand in melted lead and infused cast-iron.
Before experimenting with the melted iron,
I placed a stick, previously moistened with
water, in the stream of liquid metal, and on
withdrawing it found it to be almost as wrt
as it was before, scarcely any of the mois
ture was evaporated. The moment a dry
piece of wood was placed in contract with
the heated metal, combustion took place.
M. Covlet and I then dipped our hands into
vessels of the liquid metal, and passed our
fingers several times backwards and for
wards through a stream of metal flowing
from the furnace, the heat from the radia
tion of the fused metal being at the same
time almost unbearable. We varied these
experiments for upwards of two hours ;
and Madam Covlet, who assisted at these ex
periments, permitted her child, a girl of
nine years of age, to dip her hand in a
crucible of red hot metal with impunity.
We experimented on the melted iron.
both with our hand quite dry, and al
so when moistened with water, alcohol, and
ether. The same results were obtained as
with melted lead, and each of us exprri
enced a sensation of cold when employing
sulptiurous acid."

streets, Philadelphia.
npHE Essence is a preparation of unusual ex
JL cellcnce and ofvaned properties. In all case
where a powerful and safe stimulant is required
It is unrivalled for efficacy as well as immediate
action. To the traveller and to the family circle
it is invaluable, as a few drops diluted in sugar and
witter present a safe and agreeable remedy to the
invalid who requires immediutc relief, as well as
to tho convalescing patient who needs a gentle
tonic. In a Southern climate, where the relaxa
tion of tho system so generally induces thirst for
stimulants, it will always be found an excellent
substitute for those tempting beverages which de
bilitate the stomach and cause a morbid condition
of its powers. In dyspepsia, in relaxation of the
bowels, in naussea and sea-sickness, it is an active
and safe as well as a pleasant and refreshing re
medy, and is prescribed by the most eminent of
the medical faculty.
