The Temperance' Revival. The temperance revival in England and (ie United States nearly equals the dinien Fioiis of the religious revival to which pub lic attention has fir more than two years b -en drawn. It has taken in Ireland the shape of a Sunday-closing movement. In this all classes Catholics and Protestants, Churchmen and Dissenters have joined. Parliament still hesitates to pass the nccts-s-irv law, but the petitioners for a Sunday closing act persevere. In England, Cardi nal Manning has given himself up to tem vcrance work with an ardor not unlike that of lather Mathew. Several of the Eng lish bishops fully equal him in zeal. A Church of England Temperance Society Ins been formed, which aims to check the csL-c?ivc consumption of spirits by the c,.ni!iii!i people. Bishop Ma gee has sided with the opponents of repressive legislation ; but his declaration that he would rather s -e lviirla'id drunk than enslaved has not Vieen received with favor. Public opinion sets in favor of restraint upon the trade in liquor. The question "what to do" engages s.)ine of the best minds of the nation. Mr. )(ive has written upon it in the Fortnightly 7iVrV'5; Mr. Bright has made a speech cm the -tJothenburg" plan, and the Queen has become the patron of the Church of Eng land Temperance Society. There is a Towino: conviction in England that some thing should be done, and the English peo ple, in their slow, persistent way, are set ting about it. The statistics of Knglish drinking, if re ports can be depended upon, are fearful. n lSb'O, with a population in England and "Wales of n,)i)(J,(()t, the number of com mittals for drunkenness was SS.3G1 ; in -:.". with a population of 21,000,000, the -(;tunitta!s were -0:5. S6. At this rate of iru-rease there is no telling where the evils :f excivc drinking are going to end. TiH-ir bearing upon the industrial and com mercial as well as the social and moral i '.ur. :s of the nation is very clear. Among t:.0 .:!) of relief is that described above i he ifouienourir. so . i 1 I t-i: v of that name, in Sweden It proposes tint .ut the selling of liquors shall be taken f the hands of individuals and be as- i:ii"l by the local authorities. They have taken up temperance jis a q'lestiun of self-reformation. Mr. MiM'dv lias also in his meetings given j it '.uin-iue to this subject with the very 1m t res'.ilt. Whatever inspires intemperate m n with the confidence that they can re (Lvcr their manhood is an unmixed benefit t i them. Experience has proved that they 1 ave a peculiar power to reach each other. he past two years the "lieform Clubs'' i' K isiern Massachusetts and Main have Ju a irreat chan-ge in the social habits ( i" i!;e w.trkingnieu and fishermen ; the sam ! elT.'crs vie already visible among I'lailferai' ii d' Michigan, the workmen and miners of Pittsburgh and the adjacent region of Pennsylvania and Ohio.
