    Tobacco Made From Cabbages.
The Civilian states that the officers of
Customs in London have just stopped hat
was doubtless the commencement of a most
nefarious trade. They have seized, under
powers gives them by Victoria 39 and 40,
pec. 4-, chap, 36, a harmless-looking fluid,
which, on analysis, proved to be nicotine.
The importation, which was from Hamburg,
was exceedingly small in bulk, being about
23 gills. Its terrible potency may, how
ever, be imagined from the fact that it was
the product of 2,500 pounds of tobacco
sweepings mixed with alcohol. The pre
sumed intention of the Hamburg chemist
was that it should be used as a ready means
of converting our early York cabbages into
the 6nest Havana tobacco. The Commis
sioucrs of Customs retained a sample for
their museum, and ordered the rest of the
tobacco to be returned to the port of shipment.
Cost of the Chinese Government
From the Sun Francisco Bulletin.
I have obtained a very curious docu
ment. It is an official list of the revenues
:md expenditures of China, the outhiy of
the imperial household, as also the various
items about "sales of offices," a science in
China. It shows that the entire revenue
of the Chinese government, according to
the official showing, is only about as much
:is the revenue of Japan, yet the latter
country has a population of 33,000.000
while China has at least 400,000,000. The
f iets are that the figures, although official,
lie tearfully ; these gentry of China, hold
i:r the very highest official positions,
6 juoeze the Government out of at least
2 n,U00,000 taels annually.
' The New York city debt is now one
hundred and twenty millions, an increase
of three millions in the last year.
