- An old negro was paid his week's wages
the other day, rcccving the most of it in
silver half dollars. He looked benignly at
them as they lay in his plam, chuckled as
though in triumph, and exclaimed, "Dat's
the stuff do rats can't chew !"
On the 25th of June there was on a va
cant lot on John street, in Quebec, a bank of
tuowand ice three feet deep, covering nearly
a quarter of an acre of ground. At that
time carts were butilv employed in remov
ing the suotf and ice in eider that the land
might be built upon.

A Cat That Went to War.
Col. Stewart Wortlcy, an English officer,
tells the following story of a cat whose ac
tjuaintauee he made during the Crimean
war :
After the French troops had taken the
Malakoff I was sent into it on duty, and
found an unhappy cat bayoneted through
the foot and pinned to the ground. I took
her to mv tent; she was carefully tended,
and every morning taken to the doctor to
have her wound attended to. l'our or live
days after I was too ill one morning to get
up, and puss came and scratched at my
tent door. I took no notice ; but not long
after the doctor came to say that mine was
a wise cat, fur she had come to his tent
and quietly sat down for her foot to be
examined and have its usual bandaging,
he was watched to see what she would do
the next mornimr ; but she declined wast
ing her time scratching for me, aud went
straight to the doctor's tent and scratched
there. She was a very affectionate animal,
and it was absurd to see her following me
all over the camp with her tail carried stiff
in the air.
The School Marm.
Ladies traveling through Canada by rail
are often greatly annoyed by having their
lujriratro uneccssarily searched : but one of
the officials recently got his deserts. It
happened that a Yankee school teacher, on
her way from Kansas to Vermont, passed
through the dominion, with a trunk to
bursting with nothing contraband. When
the officer demanded her key she begged
him not to open it, assuring him it had
come through from Kansas, containing
simply clothing and books, and so full it
would be troublesome to repack it. But
he sternly demanded the key, and mali
ciously pulled everything out to the bot
tom ; then finding her assertions were
true he returned her key and advised her
to "hurry up and get the traps back," as
the train would soon move. "What is that
to me !"' said the quick-witted woman ; "I
have a check lor that trunk, and hold the
(Jrand Trunk Railway responsible for its
safe delivery. I will not take the key, and
you may do what you please with the trunk."
Report says that officer was weary and red
in the face and rather profane before he
got that trunk packed.
