The theory advanced by an old employee
of the tunnel, and the one which is more
believed than others, is that some of the
cartridges became dry from long standing
and exploded, setting the others oil at the
same time. In support of this theory the
man stated that the cartridges when made
are kept damp until used, and if allowed to

windows of Louis BellofFs saloon, on
Xewark street, were blown out and the bar
overturned.. A larjre pane of French glass
was blown from a window on the corner of

with the sash, was carried over two blocks

throwing the driver and conductor out on
the tracks and badly injuring the horses.
AX AFTESLOOK.
New Youk, May 7. Over forty thous
and people visited the scene ot the explo
sion in Jersey City to day. Absence of
danc-rous injury to any person is some
thing wonderful, when the riddled houses
in The neighborhood are seen. Many
bricks were hurled through walk within a
f.tot or so of sleepers' heads. The poliee
failed to trace anything that leads them to
suppose the strikers were the perpetrators
of the deed. The opinion is becoming
general that spontaneous combustion was
the cause. The damage, which is still only
c-uessed at, consists chiefly of broken glass
