On cross ex amination he stated that the defendant had requested him not to speak of the matter to any one ; we had a misunderstanding in regard to a promissory note ; no one was present at any of our conversation in regard to the plate ; I told Winans that Winter mute had asked me to see him in reference to getting paper and ink to manufacture counterfeit notes, and he said he had ful filled the agreement with Wintermute, but did not agree to furnish paper and ink. A United States secret-service detective, John J. Grumman, was next sworn. He stated that he never saw the defendant until he deputy marshal arrested him in Portland ; we went with him to his house, and search ed it, finding part of an electrotyping bat tery ; also found two pieces of copper, which he said he had tried to make an imprint on ; Wintermute told me that a man by the name of George Winans had said he could transfer the imprint from United States currency or anything else by the use of this battery.
