.3 ,'S 3 I P f. U h THE RUSH TO THE BLACK HILLS. interesting facts as to' the excite ' mext doubts as to the tresexce of gold ix tayixu quantities. . From the Denver Col.) News. A party of 400 strong will leave Chicago on March 13 for the -Black llills. - The expedition has beeu formed by James Conklin, who accompanied Professor Jen ney last season. The secretary of the com pany has received 2,300 letters of inquiry since the announcement of its organization. The party travel through to Cheyenne by special train, and arrangements have been t-onijileted with the railroads to transport the men from Chicago to the Hills for $26 apiece. A letter from Milwaukee says that a prosperous storekeeper intends leaving his business and leading a party, who will start on April 2, going via Cheyenne. The main company consists of men in the fol lowing professions : Two physicians, one veterinary surgeon, one druggist, two as surers, twenty carpenters, three black smiths, several grocers, a number of farm ers, one clothier, a dry goods dealer, a coa dealer, together with intelligent, indus trious laborers, and half a dozen old miners who have been in Nevada, Arizona, Color udo and California, and who feel they are Forty-niners again. The entire party will probably embrace not fewer than from 300 to 400 men. One gentleman, will take a sawmill. Another proposes to trasport a shingle mill to the laud of golden sand. Messrs. Stubbs and Thompson have re turned to Laramie from the hills, and re port lively times at Custer City. Just be fore they left a wedJing took place at Cus ter City the first to occur in that region. The parties were "William Ilardosty and Miss Ida Simms, both late of Cheyenne MeMS. Stubbs and Thompson also report that the first steam whistle ever sounded i:i that section was heard on February G. It was a saw-mill whistle. A. L Jones of Golden, now iu Custer fit', writes a letter from which we extract as follows : '"I have been prospecting every day and have found some gold, but as yet nothing that will pay. The snow has been very deep and everything is frozen up. There eems to be gold all over the country, but not in p::ying quantities. About forty miles from here are some good diggings, we hear. At this place the bed rock is from eighteen to twenty-five feet, and no gold till you reach bed rock, and then it is not very plenty. I have found some about f ur feet from the surface, but not in pay ing quantities. After I try the Deadwood and Dry wood diggings, if I find them no letter than these, I will be ready to leave tliis country." A parry of twenty, mostly coal miners, will start from Medicine Bow, on the Union l'acifie. next Monday for the gold fields. They will take route or trail rather, through Sabilie Canyon, which is reported to be free Jffsij.jW. J ales ivjofiey, a Wyoming pioneer, thinks Custer City will be the cornmcrical and 1 1 ill vo the mining town of the Hills, their relations to each other being about the same lis Denver and Central Citv. Judge Kuy Jen Jail writes an interesting letter from Custer City to the Cheyenne Leader. lie says, among other things, that only a few claims are now being work ed at that place. Quartz indications are good all over the country. Kich discoveries are reported on Deadwood and Whitewood creeks, seventy miles north ot Custer Cit In soma localities the bed rock is near the .surface : in others it is very deep. "Washed gravel, black sand and rubies, white and variegated, abound. One hundred and iifty houses will be completed in Custer City bv March 1. Some of the buildings sire substantial structures. I X ill City al ready numbers fifty cabins and 100 inhabi tants. The judge says he is satisfied with the country and Intends to stay there. i . 1 .
