the time of the big ilood, when the whole
earth was deluged with water, perched him-

saint to take him on hoard. So long as
there was hope ofhavinghis prayer answered

importunities for rescue. As soon however,
as he found his heartrending appeals were
of no avail, he called philosophy to his aid,
and told Noah that "ho might go to grass
tvith his old boat as he didn't believe there
"would be much of a shower at any rate."
So says the story. But admitting the story
to be a fiction the philosoplry indicated by it
is not without its prototype in these modern
days. Indeed it is parallel, if not eclipsed,
by the philosophy exhibited by our distin
guished neighbor over the way, in his recep
tion and treatment of the recent election re
sults, in which he and his party battled so
vehemently for, and with such earnest hope
of success, llouted, horse, foot and dragoon,
he cheers himself arid his party and pretends
to stultify both, with the assurance that
Republican success did not make much of aj
victory after all that notwithstanding we
carried Ohio by 6.000 majority, making a
gain of 23,000 over lat year, and Pennsyl
vania by 12,000, a gain of 22,000 over last
year and Massachusetts by 6,000, a gain of
12,000, and carried the New Jersey legisla
ture in both its branches, where Uedle,
Democrat, was elected governor last year by
a large majority for that State that the
majorities were small and that the Republi
cans had nothing to brag of and the Demo
crats nothing to mourn over. Truly our
neighbor is content with small favors,
especially where it is considered that small
majorities make victories as potent as large
ones for practical purposes of making gover
nors and legislators this year and Presidents
DCit.

have carried New York and Maryland.
Aye, and so you have. New York by plac
ing at the head of your ticket a Republican
his party, and mixing in a good!' portion of
jmliticians of the same kidney throughout the
whole length of the ticket. As for Maryland,
it would have been sad indeed if her Demo
cracy had gone back on the Democracy of
the north so soon after the memorable servi
ces rendered her, by the latter, in her efforts
to secure a disruption of our glorious union.

Mr. Uawlc's programme is that of a
thoroughly honorable and honest man, and
it will no doubt be strictly carried out. The
intcrst on treasury balances belongs, net to
the Treasurer, but to the people cf the
State.
There i3 a slight "onpleasantncss" in
Pike count', between the tax-payers of one
end of that circuit and the County Commis
sioner. It is all about an old bridge across
the Lackawasen. On Saturday, Cth inst.,
Mr. S. W. Drake, County Commissioner of
Pike coui;t3', Pa., was burned in effigy on the
public square in Milford, by some of the peo
ple of that place, It was in consequence of
tiie trouble about that old bridge across the
Laekawaxeu stream at Rowlands. It seems
that the company owning t his bridge have
endeavored to dispose of the structure to the
county, but that the majority of the tax
pai'ers living in the lower end of the county
were bitterly opposed to the measure.
Prior to election, Commissioner Drake,
who was a candidate for re-election, stated,
it is asserted, that he was opposed to the
proposition to have the county buy the bridge.
A number of men were working for him on
election day to secure his election on the
strength of his supposed fealty to the desires
of the people who were averse to the plan of
buying the structure. Nevertheless he was
defeated by four votes.
Immediately after election he with some
other officials, bought the old bridge for
$2,100, issuing bonds against the county for
the payment of the same. Much indignation
was felt in the community when the report
came out that this transaction had taken
place, and on Saturday evening the anger of i
a one-legged dress.
