Kite String.
One day last week a little boy who bad
been standing for sometime iu front of a
drug store in Daltimore, enviously eyening
a large reel well provided with "simmy
dimmy" twine, as the boys call it, which
was fastened to the top ofthe counter, sum
moned up courage enough to walk in and
ask for a few yarcs with which to fly his
kite. The Doctor bears the reputation of
being a good-natured man, full of humor,
and very fond of the little ones, but
the youngster approached him at u time
when lie was out of his visual mood,
and he consequently gave "No !' for
au answer. The urchin h-.ul made up his
mind to have some ot '-that cord anyhow,
and he got it. On Thursday morning the
boy entered the store, accompanied by an
other boy and a dog. 1'oy No. 1', having
placed a bottle upon the counter, demurely
asked for five cents' worth of "syrup squills
and pollvgoliie," and while the Doctor was
llhng the oruer ooy -So. 1 was tving the
end of the cord to the doir's tail. When
the man of medicine returned to the counter
the reel was flying like fury. The Doctor
quietly reached for a pallet knife, and, hav
ing hung himseli over the counter, made a
desperate whack at the cranium of the
youngster, who, he supposed, was sitting en
the floor helping himselt. Dut lo ! the boys
and the dog "Pouncer'' were not there.
The Doctor having tried iii vain to stop
his reel was obliired to give it up on account
ofthe heat it communicated to the palm of
his hand. When he reached the door he
beheld the boys upon the sidewalk about
two blocks olt, and Douneer m the mid
dle ofthe road going at the rate of forty
knots an hour, the string pointing directly
toward his tail. The reel continued to spin
for some time afterward, until it stopped ot
its own accord.
A very charming daughter of one ofthe
solid men of Poston," being at a ball, was
solicited by a combination of moustache,
starch and broadcloth, for the honor of her
hand in a dance, to which solicitation he
received an affirmative answer. In a sub
sequent conversation the aforesaid combina
tion inquired her fathers business. "lie
is a woodsawyer," she replied. The dandy
sloped, feeling that he had let himself down
on a loot or two i me association. inc

A recent advertisement contains the fol
lowing starling information: If the gen
tleman who keeps the shoe store with a red
head will return the umbrella of a young
lady with the ivory handle to the slate
rooted grocer's shop, he will hear some
thing to his advantage, as the same is the
gift of a deceased mother now no more,
with the name engraved upon it.
Experience keeps a dear school ; but fools
will learn in no other, and scarce in that ;
for it is true we may give advice ; but we
cannot give conduct. However, they who
will not be counselled cannot be helped,
and if you will not hear reason, she will
surely rap your knuckles.
Profanity never did any man the least
good. No man is the richer, or happier,
or wiser for it. It commands no one to
any society. It is disgusting to the refined;
abominable to tho good, insulting to those
with whom we associate ; degrading to the
mind ; unprofitable needier-.? ai d injurion3
to fct ioty.

Victor Pio'ett, the Democratic. ca:ididare
ibr Stiite Treasurer, was a member of the'
House at Ilarrisburg in 1 S KI, and of tlnv
Committee on Banks. An elfort Was i'iHid:.y
to repeal the charter of the Lehigh County'
Hank, and l'iolett was handed $100 in tlu;
uncurront notes of the riainfield Dank of
New Jersey, so as to let the bill out ofthe
committee. A man by the name of McCook.
was tried for this tdieged bribery, l'iolett
bein-j" called as. a witness against him in
deed lie was the iii'biuier a?id had returned
the money the nxt day after receiving it.
Among other things Piolett said he had:
ono itito AicCook's room and received tlm
?i00 ; returned to his own room, sat down
and counted the money, and ho said he
wept to think that any one would be, or
could be bribed for $4U0. Thaddeus Ste
vens said, --(lentlemen of the jury, I have
been doubting Mr. l'ioiett'.s statement here
tofore. Here is one part I suppose to be
exactly true. lie tells you about cou;vtint!
the money in bis own ronl -bedding; tears.,
lie admitted that ho was" hot aware of itr
being riainfield D.mk notes until this time.
Now, lie knew that Hainlield Dank wis in
bad repute, in fact he supposed' it to be ut
terly worthless. These tears fell not be
cause lie thought they li.nl passed utterly
worthless paper upon him. Jlis virtue
could not stand au attempt to bribe him
with counterfeit money. Now. gentlem;.iv
of the jury, had he not got ton into : pas
sion over it, had he gone to a broker s aiUli
learned that he could have had them changed
to gold or silver lor from five to seven per
cent., he would have pocketed the insult
and you would have been saved the trial of
McCook."
Col. A. Iliilands was a member of tlifk-

and knows all the details. The Dank Com

inviting this atf'air to bribe him.
Cheating Not Profitable.
One morning a respectable locking and
quite weaitliy tanner, who was generally
kuown as a very close chiiver, whenever ho'
had a chance, brought his butter hand
somely done up in pound rolls. This was
at a time when it was scarce and worth
three shillings, quick sales at that price,
which no doubt had induced him- to scauL
the weight of each roll. Unexpectedly the"
weigh laastcr saw his butter opened for'
sale, when he prepared' his test seals to
weigh it : while doing so the farmer in his
anxiety, quick as thought, slipped a ten
dollar gold piece out of his vest pocket, and
while the weigh.-master's back was turned,
thrust it into the top" roll, as-he thought,,
unperceived by any one.
The roll was taken up and it weighed
full weight, which satisfied him Avithouf
weighing any other ; but while he was put
ting up his scales, a Quaker gentleman who
had been standing near by, and had seen
the whole transaction, came up and in
quired the price of butter. "Three shil
lings," said the farmer.
"Put me that roll in my kettle," says,
the Quaker, poiting to the roll with the
gold piece iu.
Farmer 'T have sold that roll to a
friend."
"Xo, thee has not thee can give thy
friend another 'roll ; they are all good ami
weigh auke. lie turned and questioner
the weigh master, who said to the farmer :
"lie was entitled to that roll, or any roll
he chose to take, u they were priced to
him." AVith this the Quaker took up the
gold roll and placed it in his kettle, then
laid down three shillings ; and as he was
going he coolly told the farmer. "The
will not always find cheating profitable."'
A country clergyman, who had been ac

exceedingly hot and his sermon exceedingly
long, he made his preparations accordingly.
He first removed his cravat, aud theu his
collar and culfs, and theu his coat, and was

years old and is the mother of six calves
the last three at one birth. The trio are
heifers, marked so nearly alike that they
have to be ribboned to distinguish one from
another. They are five weeks old, ph'uv,
healthy, perfect and-remarkably handsome,

the possession of such an unusual family, is
giving them the best of attention and an
