Clarence, Krie county, N. Y., in 1824, and

Berks county, raised a potato of the Early
llusc variety, this season, which measured
niie f ot five and a half inches in length,
and eleven and one-half inches in circum
ferciiej. It was taken from a stalk to
which forty smaller tubers were attached.
The Fuited States coast survey service
are erecting a signal tower on the Lehigh
mountain, three miles south of Allentown,
II r the purpose of aiding in a sj'stcm of
angles inland, in order to make the coast
survey complete under the principles it is
now being conducted upon, and not for a
weather signal.
A fourteen-year-old girl in Sandy Hill.
N. Y., eloped with a school boy, got mar
ried, and returned home with him to be
forgiven. She was soundly spanked by her
mother and the husband on his way out of
the house was kicked eighteen tunes by
her father. They had never read any
thing like that in novels.
A gentleman living at Slatedale, Lehigh
count y, one morning last week gave two
fine hogs some potato vines which were
lull uf potato bugs, not thinking that they
would be harmed by them. The hogs eat
freely of the vines, and in the afternoon
Kith died. It is supposed the bugs poisoned
them, as no Paris grccu had been used on
the vines.

James I. Lord to compel him to refund
$35,000 drawn from the State Treasury, ac
cording to Gov. Tilden, without authority
f law, has been decided by Judge West
brook iti favor of Lord. Either Tilden was
lying, in his allegations of fraud in this and
innlar cases, or the courts are on the side
offraud. To which conclusion shall we
come ?
They are having hard times in Canada,
due probably to the depression in trade the
world over. Failures and temporary sus
pensions have been reported from nearly
