Tlie llorc have the advantage of being
IIC..r to the raw ore, and thus saving trans
.ortation ; and the Chemical Copper Com
mnv recently founded at Pluenixville,
oonti'mous to the Schuylkill Works, that
ire some three years old, have a material
-,iJ in the Hunt and Douglass process that
na been successfully tried by the Ore
Knob mine in North Carolina. The Schuyl
kiil Works that were burned a year ago,
educed 100.G75 pounds of ingot copper,
ilniost exclusively from Pennsylvania ores,
i the six months preceding their destruc
tion. It is the only establishment in the
c,.., rpilnehitr direct from the ores, and
has a weekly capacity of 15,000 pounds of
u.rt. The merit ot the product is snown
iinhe fact that it nets five cents per pound
more to the company in Liverpool than in
Philadelphia, after paying all charges for
transportation.
The Chemical Company located near the
Schuylkill have two- large buildings and
.K'd machinery. They accomplish the re
duction of the crude ore by a chemical pro
v.s. with salt and iron in a single furnace,
much more cheaply than it can be done by
Mucking. They have leased a fine deposit
if copper recently struck in York count-;
obtain other ore from Montgomery, Berks
and Lebanon counties and draw a part of
their supplies from Texas, Cuba, New
Mexico, Spain and Missouri the Texan
yielding up to sixty per cent., while much
of the Pennsylvania ore will give over five
per cent. The process requires a prelim
inary roasting ; roasting to blue metal ; then
to white, to blister and refining, when it is
cast into ingots and sold at from twenty to
thirty cents per pound. The company em
ploy fifty men in their own mines and last
year sold 15.000 pounds to the Mint. The
condition of the market and the superiority
i 'the process employed warrant a sanguine
belief that before long these smelting works
will interfere with the exportation hence to
Swansea, draw from Central and South
America, and create another industrial
avocation that is not only kindred to that
of iron, but related to lead and nickel and
y.inc, and eminently suitable for a com
munity that possesses peculiar knowledge
and resources of all kinds for equalling any
in every branch of metallurgy. The new
enterprise is based upon knowledge and ex
perience ; has skill and capital at its com
mand and not only promises success to its
promoters but enlargements that must be
very valuable to the country. Philadelphia

On one would think it was hard times
with the farmers on reading the reports of
blooded stock sales throughout the West.
We have before us, in the Ohio Fanm :r,
a report of a Kentucky auction of thorougl
bred horses, which embraces sales at 4,-
, S3.1O0, 82,575, $.800, and soon;
and sales of short-horn and Alderncy cat
tle, at $S.0OO down to 84,000 arc not un
common occurrences this year. There are,
of course, great variations in prices of this
kind or stock ; but the breeders of such cat
tie think nothing of going up to $3,000, or
810.000 for a fancy animal with which to
cross their own lines of stock : and the far
mors who want to have pure blood in their
animals, are tree buyers of blooded cows
at S200, $300, 8500 and up to 81,000. The
tact that they are able to buy at these
prices is an encouraging sign. It certainly
docs not look as if the times were hard
with liem.
Land is slow of sale out in Michigan,
jjust now. A t the auction sale of State
lands held at the State Land Office on the
-Oth of June, only 8.000 acres were sold,
ut of over C0,000 acres offered. The
prices ranged from $1 25 to $10 per acre.
The balance of these lands will be placed
in market subject to private purchase. The
hard times have their effect on these sales,
for if these lauds had been similiarly of
fered five years ago hardly an acre would
have been left. Nearly all of the lands
purchased were paid for in State "scrip."
