A miserly old lady kept an inn. One
day a famished soldier called on her for
something to cat. Some bones that were
pretty well picked were nlaced before him.
After finishing his. dinner, a little son of
tne laudlady, noticing that the soldier found
it rather difficult to make out much of a
dinner, put some money into his hands as
he stepped out of the door. When his
mother came in, he asked her how much it
was wgrth to pick those old bones.
"Six peuce, my dear," said the eld lady,
expecting to receive the money.
"I thought so," replied the boy, "so I
gave the soldier a sixpence fjr being it."
Some people don't like the odor of Lim
bcrger cheese ; but they are the folks that
can't appreciate the flavor of a well devel
oped polecat. One evening, not very long
since,, a gentleman had made his prepara
tions to attend prayer meeting with his
wife. Trior to starting he came down town
to his place of business, and while there an
acquaintance discovered that he was about
to engage in Wednesday evening devotions.
Accordinoly he put up a villainous job.
Procuring a huge slice of the most fragrant
Limbcrger cheese to be had, he watched
his opportunity, and just as the gentleman
stepped out of the door to go home for his
wiic, slipped it into his pocket. The par
ties repaired to the church, and were soon
seated side side by side in a comfortable
pew near the stove. Soon the cheese be
gan to grow loud. The sisters turned their
heads about and looked as if a kraut barrel
had exploded. The deacons elevated their
noses and thought cf the third plague of
Jigypt. lhe preacher smellod a great
smell, and the wife of the unconscious odor
casket nudged her spouse and inquired if
he didn t smell something. "JManar, it s
awful," he responded ; "It must be in the
coal." The more the assembly speculated
the louder the odor became and finally all
hands united in hurrying the proceedings
to a close. Arrived at home, and while
preparing to retire, the gentieman discov
ered the cause of the unpleasantness and
removed it.
Tax on Weiss Beer.
Weis3 beer, of certain strength, has by
former ruliings of the interernal revenue
department, been considered as coming with
in the exemption from taxation of "root
beer and other small beer." The revised
statutes of the United States, however, pro
vide that a tax of one dollar per barrel shall
be paid on all beer, &c, and other fermen
ted li.uor3, and as the exemption act re
fered to was not re-enacted, but became
void, and weiss beer being fermented li
quor, produced from malt, or a substitute
therefore, and hops, it must be considered
as coming within the descriptiou of fer
mented liquors, liable to taxation. There
fore, all weiss beer made and sold, or re
moved for consumption or sale, without
payment of tax by affixing stamps, on and
after January 1st, 1S75, wUl be reported
for assessment by collectors, and brewers
will be required to return such weiis beer
as is made by them after the date afore
said. A Magnificent Gift to Gen. Sherman's
Daughter.
The wedding present from the Khedive
of Europe to the daughter of Gen. Sher
man recently arrived in New York, and is
thus described by the reporters : The
present is a parure of diamonds, necklace
and ear drops, said to be the most magni
ficent and valuable in this country. The
necklace is composed of four strands of dia
monds, each of which is a brilliant. Not
one of them is worth less than $1,000. The
chain i3 studded with the gems, and they
arc set so closely together as to hide the gold.
There are so many of them that Deputy
Collector Lydeckcr tired in the count.
Tho strand3 are ioined bv ten immense
stones, each of which is encircled by smaller

gems. The one m lrcnt is tne size oi a
hickory nut and is worth 20,000. Pendant
from the front is a festoon of brilliants
with five big pcarshaped stones of the finest
water lustre hanging from it. The orna
ments for the ear are single stones equally
as lar:e as the rest. The entire set is ap-
praised at from 3ZD0,0UU to JU'J,UUU. ine
p.irp for the icwels is Dlain morocco, with

of the Treasury orders a tree permit ior
