Continued from First I'affC. Frovit ' these we have everything to encourage the carrying out of this plan. .. " FRIDAY, DKO. 4th, 1874. : " Institute met per adjournment. Mr. Morcy opened the discussion on Transitive verds. Ail verbs are either transitive or intransitive. Explanation of what a transitive verb is. A transitive verb is transitive whether there is any f'l'j vt or not, and they should be parsed as eivh. i Prof. Baub continued the discuinn of rranunar from where Mr. Morey left it. He then spoke of prepositional antecedents. A preposition always shows the. relation between its object and the word modified bv the prepositiuu and ita object. If the verb preceding, expresses positive action, the noun following is in the nuini native case otherwise it i3 in the objective cap?. In parsing, the relative pronoun "what,'' Prof, differs from most grammarians. The relative v ital lias a double construction and is sometimes the object of two different verbs, and is sometimes the obiect of one verb and (he subject of another. In parsing the word "mine," we should sav it has the possessive form and may be t-it her subject or object. The next thuiir in order was some general ffiicntious by teachers. The committee on resolutions then made th-nr report which was accepted. (Vnmiittee's report : Resolved, That District and County Institutes are the best means of advancing the cause of education. Resolccd, That we would urge upon the teachers in the county, the importance and recesoify of establishing District Teachers' InitUtes, Resolved, That this year's Institute, with all its faults and defects, was a decided meecss, and of advantage to all the teachers th:;t attended it, Rejoiced., That inasmuch as we hold a Teachers' Institute annually, and inasmuch ; we have no better place to meet in than the Court House, which has become too small f.T this as well as for other purposes, it is our opoiuion, either, that the county authorities should erect a Court House con taining a room sufficiently large to accom modate from five hundred to six hundevd people or that the citizens of Stroudsburg slit u'd erect a public hall sufficient for all public purposes in a town of its size. Resolccd, That as members of the Coun ty Insitutc, we heartily endors the action of the citizens of Stroiu'sburg, East Streuds bur and vicinity in their efforts to have a .Vt:iie Normal School established in this county ; and we earnestly hope that im i:i?il:..te steps will be taken to secure suf ficient funds and erect the necessrry build ings, so that the Institution may be recognized by the state authorities, and the j-e'iuol be opened at the earliest possible Rctolccd, That we regret that not more of the clergymen and other professional mo:) in the town and county, were present ar ttiis session of the Institute. Rrsohrd, That we tender our thanks to to the officers of the Institute, for the manner in which thev discharged their respective duties, R-:nlctd. That we tender our thanks to the citizens of Stroudsburg for the tokens of kindness with which they were pleased to f.vor us. R':'Accd, That we tender our thanks to t'c se ladies and gentlemen who took the 1 .id in favoring the Institute with vocal and instrumental music. Si'.rned. D. E. SucriLER,") J. E. Kintnek, Committee. M. F. Flint. j . Common Sense. T . u iias been said in another form of cx- j ressi on that the slightest excess cf cx- ' uses over income is poverty, and the l ightest excess of income over expenses is wealth. The ability of practical farmers to nias.ter this great problem of life is not so much dependent upon what the' know oi their business as on their faculty to apply waut they know. Success in business is cbie to administration. Capacity in ;. 1 ministration is due to that faculty, power, or quality called common sense, which everybody speaks well of and nobody understands exactly. We infer its presence or its absence from the results of a man's life. Y'c venture upon a definition of the invise we are usng not so much for the purpose of making its meaning clear as for the greater purpose of giving it a loftier place in your thoughts. Common sense is :t .degree, a hiiih decree in fine, the highest degree of human wisdom applied to practical things. It is not learning ; it is not knowledge ; it is rather the faculty of applying what we may know to what we ! .). Oi-her things being ejual, the practical farmer who knows the most will do the best ; but other things not being equal, a man who excels in wisdom in administra tion may surpass a man of greater learning, or even greater knowledge of things. But do not allow this suggestion to lead you to place a low estimate upon learning, whether general or professional ; culture of every sort gives us capacity to appreciate wisdom, au 1 opportunity also for its exercise. 1 : Beware of tha Sink. A distinguished medical authority warns the drinkers'of water of wells near dwell ings, to beware of the typhoid poison sure to be found booner or later in these reservoirs, if any of the house drainage can percolate to them. The gelatinous matter often found upon the stones of a well is poison to the human system, causing by its spores a fermentation of the blood, " with the abnormal heat of fever. Wholesome, untainted water is always free from color and odor. To test it thoroughly, place in it a few grains of lump sugar, and expos it, stop.ered to sunlight, in a window. It", even after an exj osure of eight or ten days the water becomes turpid, be sure that it has been contaminated by sewerage of some kind. If it remains perfectly clear, it is pure and sate. It is not generally knowu that "corn" in Kuglaiid means wheat. Over here it means maiz and the uTerence is amazing. -IT u -BLATCIl LEY'S - Improved CUri.'MHER WOnD PUMP. TaJ-tele. Humble.
