The tax-rate in Thiladeiphia, next Year

The fires in Fayette county last week
swept over a space of forty square miles,
destroying large quantities of fencing and
timber.
There were 3S5 deaths in Erie from
January 1st to November 1st. Of this
number 215 were under ten years old,
while 33 died from old acre.
The wages or the track laborers on the
Morris and Essex and Delaware, Lacka
wanna and Western Railroads have been
reduced to one dollar p-er day.
The number of cmigarnts arrived at
Liverpool from the United States and
Canada, during the six weeks from the
middle of August to the first of October,
reached no less than 8,1 G8.
Major J. W. Ormsby, near Sharon, has
trom twenty ewes raised thirty-two lambs,
which sold for $140. The clip from the
same ewes brought $G0, making $200 r-ro-
nt in one year lrom the ewes.
Icicles an ich and a half thick have al
ready formed on the mountains immediate
ly above Maueli Chunk, and will probably
stay there all winter: Maucb Chunk is
the place to look for the earliest cold.
At a recent cattle show at Faris, K,
twenty-one cows wero sold at an average
of BVJdn ahead and fourteen bulb at an
average of 81195. Ona cow sold for $G000,
anther for $5100, and still an other for
$1400.
A curious fish, says the Troy 7Yi cs, was
caught near the Jxissemcr bteel Works thi
morning by Robert Cole. It swims like a
fish, walks like a lizard, has a tail like an
eel, a head like a catfish and a body similar
to the lizard. It is about twelve inches
long and has four legs. It has a smooth
skin and is covered with red and silver
spots.
