Its weight was estimated at 3000 tons, and it was dis charged by means of electricity. There is a nugget of Astralian gold on exhibition among the curiosities in Pardee Hall, Lafyettc College, which is solid, and worth over 10,000. It is of a bright yel low color, beautiful to look at. Mr. Judson is said to be 102 years old, and looks as if he might live ten years yet. It is affirmed-that the worst toothache, or neuralgia coming from the teeth, may be speedily and delightfully ended by the application of a small bit of clean cotton saturated in a strong sloution of ammonia to the defective tooth. A prominent oeculist says that the con tagious Egyptian or granular inflammation .f the eyes is spreading rapidly through out the country, and that he has been able In many, and, indeed, in a majority of eases, to trace the disease to what arc commonly called rolling towels. Towels of this kind ;tre generally found in country hotels and in the dwellings of the working classes, and !eing thus used by nearly every one, are made the carriers of one of the most dan gerous and, as regards its symptoms, most troublesome diseases of the eye. This be ing the ease, it is urgently recommended that the use of these rolling towels be dis carded, and thus one of the special vehicles for the spread of a most dangerous disor der of the eyes one by which thousands of workingmen are annually deprived of their means of support will no x.ist. longer Dr. Robert "Wood at Lowell, Mass., as sisted by Drs. Stickney, Very and Thayer, of Boston, performed a surgical operation on a colt eight months old that of remov ing a fifth leg. The extra leg was firmly .attached to the metacarpal bone of the natural leg just below the knee, on the in Mde, and was perfect in structure, having a perfectly foi-ied metacarpal bone, sessa- moids, a perlect ietlock joint, long and short pasterns, coronet, and a good shaped foot. Also the two sets of tendons, the flex ors and extensors, suspensory ligament, blood vessels and nerves, all covered by .skin and hair, all of which was success fully removed by the above named gentle men. The colt is at present doing well, and with every prospect of the leg re suming it3 normal size and shape, feuch a malformation and surgical operation is without a paralled in this country. A new invention has just been tried in Paris which is said to render drowning a thing of the past. It consists in the em ployment of a pneumatic India rubber tube rolled round the body with a sufficient number of folds to contain the necessary amount of air. The tube is placed con cealed in a double envelope, forming a shirt. It terminates by a mouth-piece, which shuts by the aid of a simple copper botton. The operation is simple in the extreme, and the fcwimmer or immersed person has enough air for a whole day. When the apparatus eomes to diminish in volume it is easy to expand it again by the printiplal tube in deep water without any effort or difficulty. The trial was witnessed at the Henry the Fourth baths, when the inventor, M. Gosselin, showed its properties. He stood upright, the hands raised above the head, when the water did not come above his fchoulders, he then floated on his back with arras crossed. The apparatus can be worn under the clothes like a flannel waistcoat. It extends from the neck to the knees, fas tened in front by a row of buttons. It is composed of a double flannel, in the midst of which an India rubber tube circulates, starting from the top of the chest, ascend ing the left side of the neck, and following the central line of the back ; it there di vides in two branches, encirculing the thighs as far as the knees. From the cen tral part of the principal tube twelve or fifteen lesser tubes diverge to make the round of the body, and meet in front where the row of buttons is. This improvement on the life-belt is said to be certain to supercede all existing appliances in teach ing swimming or saving lives from ship wreck, j DLATCIILEY'S Improved CUCUMHEIt WOOD PUMP TasUless, Durable.
