JCrrThis Judicial District is now composed
of 3I'nroe and Carbon counties, and is down
in the book, and will hereafter be known as
the Forty-third Judicial District. Wayne
and Pike counties comprise the Twenfy-sec-(
lid District, the number uudcr which we
formerly sought and secured justice. Judge
Dreher will continue in the discharge of the
.lu Mrs of President Judge for us, and Wayne
ud Pike will have to hunt up a new man to
do the same for them. Our people will not
regret (his arrangement.
Tsjj' The newspapers of this state arc dis
cussing candidates for the election next Fall,
when a Lieutenant-Governor and two Judges
of the Supreme Court will be chosen. At
. resent, the chief interest is concerning the
nominees forjudges, since the minority sys
tem provided for by the new Constitution
insures the election of one candidate by each
parly. The nominations by the Conventions
are therefore virtually elections, as each elec
tor ca:i vote for only one candidate. Judge
Passon, seems to be the favorite among the
Republicans, although there is a strong
movement iu favor of Judge Butler of Ches
ter c-mmtj'. The Democrats hare a larger
luimbcr of candidates, among whom the
most prominent are Judge William Elwell of
('u!u:ul iii, Judge Ludlow, and the lion. Geo.

A sight worthy to look at. The large

of boots and shoes, trunks and valices,

therefore one and all to call on Simon Fried

By reference to our advertising column? it

We congratulate our young friend upon his

Patterson has been a hard student, and with
his fine abilities and the honors with which

"Cover them over with beautiful
flowers," by Stewart, is a New Quartette
for Decoration Day. The sentiment embraced
in the celebration is a beautiful one, and the
Quartette named is certainly, both in words
and music, wedded to the occasion. Every
body who loved the brave boys, and cherish
es the memory of our fallen heroes, will want
to hear the song, and as it is now in full re
hearsal wherever the day is honored "Cover
them over with beautiful flowers" will be
come very popular. It can be had at all
music stores for 30 cents, or will be mailed
for that amount by the publishers, Lee &
Walker, Philadelphia.
The storm which prevailed here on Thurs
day night and Friday morning as a whizzle,
a frizzle and a perfect deluge, in other
sections ruled as a good old fashioned suow
storm. Iu Biughamton snow fell to the
depth of 14- inches. In Scranton the lay of
"the beautiful" measured six inches. Through
the Beech, or from Scranton to the Tunnel
above Oakland, the ground was covered, and
the trees were literally bent down with snow.
From the tunnel down rain was the order,
varied with occasional snow flakes. From re
ports published elsewhere it will be seen that

The revival meetings held in the Presby
terian church in this borough during the
1 ast winter culminated in most glorious re
1'gious results. On Sunday last forty-four
new members were received into full com
muiiion. These with the tweuty received in
February makes an addition of sixty-four to
the membership as the result of the winter's
work. The Rev. Mr. Dinsmore, the pastor,
is certainly to be congratulated over the suc
cess which his Divine Master has vouchsafed
to his efforts.
Our citizen generally will learn with re
gret that Dr. Geo. W. Seip, one of our most
successful Medical practioners has about
completed his arrangements to leave here and
take up the practice of his profession in the
city of Philadelphia. The Doctor has been
a resident of town and neighborhood for over
a dozen year.?. By his skill he has built up
a large practice, and by his suavity of man
ner endeared to himself many friends, and
one would think he could be content here
But his love for the intricacies of his profes
sion prompts him to seek a larger field fo
investigation, and our knowledge of the man
prompts the belief that he will soon be heard
of in higher walks of Medical and Surgical
Science than he could hope to occupy here
We learn that his plan comprises a trip to
the hospitals of Europe before settling in the
city of Brotherly love. The Doctor will
carry with him the best wishes of all our
citizens.
McCarty & Sons have entered upon the
occupancy of their recently erected addition to
their already extensive ware-rooms. Their show
rooms now measure 25 by 100 feet, and these
with their large basemeut are already filled
to overflowing with all kinds and qualities of
furniture, principally of their own manu
facture. It will pay to visit the establish
ment first to see what is to be seen, but it
will pay still better to call if you wish to
purchase any thing iu the furniture line, for
here you can get just what you want at the
lowest prices.
Information Wanted. The undersign

cerning the whereabouts of his father Levi
Strouss who left his place of residence on
Saturday evening, the 4th inst. since which
time nothing has been heard of him. Mr.
Strouss is about 5 feet 8 inches high, stoutly
built, has dark complexion, black hair sprink

age. Any information concerning him will
be most thankfully received by

The Republic. The April number of
this magazine, which ought to be styled a
political science monthly, has been received.
Among its leading articles is one entitled
"has the Government neglected the Interests
of the Farmers," which is a most veri
table sketch of the progress of agriculture in
the United States, from the time of the in
troduction of the first cattle to the present
day. "The Department of State," is another
interesting article, giving as it docs a com
plete exposition of the functions of this
Department ; an abstract from the report of
the Pennsylvania railroad gives very many
important facts, and the article entitled "the
State and the liquor traffic," endeavors to
treat that question from the standpoint o
the statesman. There is no publication ex
taut that gives the same amount of well selec
ted political information in so entertaining a
form as The llepullic. It is indispensable
to the political writer and speaker. The ap
pendix contaius three very valuable speeches
two by McCrary, of Iowa, and Judge
Hoar, of Massachusetts, upon the subject o
regulating the railway traffic, and one by Mr.
Chipman, in which the relations of the capi
tal to the general government are ably and
interestingly treated. Although The Repub
lic contains as many pages of reading as any
first-class magazine, it is furnished at hal
price two dollars per anuum.
Has the Normal School project died? It
is a pity that whereas a month ago it was
the theme on every man's tongue now we
icar nothing about it. Millersville and
Kutztown were not built up in this way. In
those places work, energetic, persevering
work, was the order of the day, and the re
sult is thrifty Schools, and marvelous socia
and Drecuniary prosperity. Things here
can be made the same or even better if we
pursue the same course that was pursued
there. Millersville and Kutztown both star
ted with small beginnings, but the shoulder
once put to the wheel there was no getting
tired, no stopping. Now however the day
of rest has come. Both institutions pay their
way, and their projectors have nothing to do
but set down, talk over the result of their
abors and enjoy the fruits. This experience
cannot fail to be ours, if we put the same
stamnia in our work. Why not then wake
up and go to work again this time deter
mined, in face of every obstacle, to conquer
victory. Perseverance in this regard wil
make us open our eyes with wonder.
Improvements. A Mr. Keys, who, with
his family, has visited this section for severa
seasons past, is having erected for himself a
fine summer residence, on the hill near High
land Dell. The building will be forty by fifty
feet on the ground, and two stories high
aud will prove an ornament to the locality,
James Edinger, is preparing the founda
tion for his new store building to be erecte
on the ground recently purchased by him o
Win. Hollinshcad, on Main street.
John Selwood has his new house, erecting
cn the lot purchased of Peter Robeson, near
Squire Drake's office, Stroud tsp., well un
dcr way.
Stroud Burson, has broken ground for
new residence on Centre street, just abov
the corner of Sarah, which will doubtless be
a fine affair.
John Keller is building an extensive chick
cry, corner of Franklin and Sarah streets
this borough. He designs going into the
fancy chicken business, and as a foundation
for his stock has purchased a cock and hen
that are really wonders in their way. They
are of the red cochin brood, and bulky as
elephants, more or less.
From rumors that reach us, we judge that
the march of improvement will be steadily
onward during the coming summer, a num
bcr of dwellings being already projected.
