DON'T KILL IT.
4 Sjuie a copper, t-ir, I era starving,'
vere the words of a pour half ptarved raj;
ced d:io to a gentleman hastening home
oi,e bitter cold oi;ht. '-Spate a copper,
sir, aud God will bless jou."
Struck with the fellow's manner and
appearance, the gentleman stopped and
huid :
You look aa if you had eecn better
days. If you will tell me candidly what
has l-eeu your greatest failing through life
111 give you enough to pay your lodg
logs.
"I'm afraid I could hardly do that,"
the beiiaar answered with a mournful
?u:i!e.
"Try, man, try. Here's a shilliug to
sharpen your memory ; only be sure you
speak the truth."
The man pressed the coin tightly in
his haud and after thinkiug for nearly a
iniuute, said :
,"To be honest with you, then, I be
lieve my greatest fault has been in learn
ing to kill time." When I waa a boy I
had kind, loving parents, who let mc du
pretty much as I liked ; so I became idle
and careless, aud never once thought of
the change in store for me. In hope
that I should one day make my mark i
the world, I was sent to college ; but there
wasted my time in idle dreaming and ex
pensive amusements. If I had been a
poor bay, with necessity starting me in
the face, I think I should have done bet
ter. But somehow I fell into the notion
ihat life was to be one continued holidady
I gradually became fond of wine and
company. In a few years my parent.
Loth died ; you can guess the rest. I soon
wasted what little they left me, and it is
now too late to combat my old habits
Yes, fir; idleness has ruined me."
"I believe your story," said the gentle
man, "and I will tell it to my boys as a
warning. I am sorry for you ; indeed I
uin. But it is never too late to reform
Come to my oQce to morrow and let me
iuspire you with courage."
And giving the man a piece of money.
and indicating where he could be found,
he hurried on.
"ever ki.i time, L-oys. lie is your
best friend. Don't let him slip through
your Cogcrs when you are young, ns the
. beggar did. The days of your boyhood
are the most precious you will ever see
The habits you form will stick to you like
wax. If they are good ones, life will be
a pleasure and a true success. You may
not grow rich, bat your life will be a real
success nevertheless.
If, on the contrary, you waste your
early years, live for fun only, t rifle with
your opportunities, you will find after a
while that your life is a failure yes,
even if you should be very rich.

A Novel Device for Makisg; Buildings
Firo-Proof.
From the American Artisan
Can a totally fire proof building bt;
made? To believe that this is itnpos
ible would be greatly to depreciate the
mechanical and scientific resources of the
ui:e. Fothia can burn till heated to the
temperature at which it combines with
oxygen ; the problem of Ere proofing, will
then be solved when we discover the
means by which the temperature of com
bustiblcs can be kept from reaching the
temperature of combustion. Wc can ap
ply the most intense heat to steam-boilers
without burning them. Why 1 Because
each atom of water they contain i3 a swift
vehicle to seize and carry away heat. Let
n make up the partition cf walls of build
inrs ia a manner analogous to Fectional
steamboilers, and no Ore would be com
municated from one building to another
A tbin; so evident should have attracted
the atteution of architects loo before this.
In this way iron, which by itself is not a
fire-prooQinjr material, can, by the most
economical use of water, be made to stand
the fevercst ordeal
The iron inclosed water spaces need
not be more than one inch ia thickness
and need never be subjected to i
hydraulic pressure of more three or four
feet head. These walls can, therefore,
be made of thiu metal. They can bo
supplied with water from the common
water service, or from tanks placed at the
tops of buildio-s. Iu case of fire, the
turning of a single cock would supply
them with water, and the temperature of
the partitions could never rise above 212
deg. Fahrenheit till the water had all
boiled away. In this way, not a tithe of
the water now vainly used to extinguish
such fires as these of Chicago aod Boston
would be needed to preserve the whole
eity.
We feel certain that do solid material
known to the arts is capable of withstand
ing the heat generated in these great Ores.
Wc must fiind something that heat will not
melt, or warp, or crack, and otherwise so
impervious to air that fire cannot com
municate with combustibles stored in
buildings, or we must expend the force
yf the heat on something we can afford
So waste economically. This something
water, and we thiok we have pointed
vit the way to use it.
