TIio English Coal Fields. The English coal Gelds have just been gauged by a scientific commission, and with a somewhat startling result. Il eeems there is a supply which may last 1270 years, and may give out in 27C years. The great discrepancy between the two estimates results from the great uncertainty which of uecessity exists as to some of the conditions of the problem. First, it is not certain how much coal there is under the British islands, though the available supply is estimated by the treo'.oists at 146,430 million tons. Secondly, it is uot certain how deep future generations will be able to work. As the temperature of the air in the mines is about 50 degrees at the depth of fifty feet, and increa?es at the rate of one degree for every sixty feet of additional depth, it is easily calculated that at the depth of about 3,000 feet it would be 100 degrees. Deeper than this, it would hardly be practicable to work, unless with better methods of cooling the mines than are now in use. With such improved methods it is thought that mines might be worked to a depth of 4,000 feet. Thirdly, the rate of increase of the con sumption ofcoal is uncertain. For domestic purposes alone it is computed that the English people are now using about one ton a year per head ; and the quantity de voured by the myriads of steam engines is continually increasing. At the present rate of consumption, 1270 years is the estimated duration of the supply at the present rate of incrcrse of consumption 270 years. What the actual intermediate figure will be, it is impossible at present to say. Perhays in four or five hundred years England may be obliged to retire from the manufacturing business unless in the mean time she learns to drive her mills by he heat of the suu, or the force of the winds and tides. At any rate it is interesting to see a great nation gravely calculating the period of her own proba ble death, and considering the means o.' delaying it. Beans as a Field Crop. A number of correspondents have ask cd for information relating to the cultiva lion of beans as a field crop, or for seed, including soil adapted to the crop, varieties, time of planting, etc. We shall treat briefly, from this standpoint ; since if wanted for family use, either green or dry the difference in cultivation will be obvious. The chief expense will be found to be in pulling, the planting and cultiva tion being exceedingly simple; but the clanger of loss through rainy weather, at harvest time, is often another difficulty to the grower. Beans for field culture should be sown in drills two feet apart, at the rate of one to one and a half bushels per acre. Sow in the spring, on dry, mellow soil, about the time that field corn is two or three iuches high, or after the soil is thorough ly warn, and all the danger of frost is over. A double shovel plow is one of the best implements to cultivate with during the early growth. Just before, or about the time of blossoming, finish with the t-itigle shovel, leaving the furrow in the middle between the rows. Y heo thorough o ly ripe, pull them, keeping them grasped in the baud, next the root, until you have a handful. Set them on the tops, in wiud rows, squeezing the root together, and secure the crop, if possible, without rain. The great difficulty with beans i3 to keep them bright after pulling ; and if accomplished, it save3 the expense of future hand picking. Many persons etack them thinly around rough poles, with spurs projecting to keep them off the ground. Place the roots next the poles, with the tops slantiog downward as much as possible. Fasten, and cap the top with fclough hay, to keep off the rain ; and when thoroughly dry, remove to the barn, and mow them away; or, if threshed immediately, spread thinly and turn occasionally, until entirely hard and dry. If packed in barrels or sacks before they are thoroughly seasoned, they wilJ be liable to mold or become discolored. The cultvation of bean3 may also in clude the sort usually grown for market ing green, or as they are termed, string beans The cultivation of these varieties is-exactly like that of the white sorts, and the curing is precisely the same; pole beans, however, are planted 10 hills three and one half feet apart, and supported with proper poles. In this case labor is uecessary, since it is difficult to gei through them with a horse. The sort, usually grown for bush striog beans are Red eyed China, Valentine, Long Yellow Six Weeks, Hound lellow Six Weeks and Early Rachel. Good varieties of pole beans are Case Knife, Indian Chief, Saber or Cimeter and White Cranberry. The list of varieties of garden beans cultiva tion is large, and includes Dalichos, 01 asparagus beans, and Phaseolus, or Lima beans, Scarlet runners, etc. The White Navy bean is the sort usually grown f r shipment, but the White Marrow if superior for family use; but beans are at best a crop subject to many risks.
