With all their lying and forgery the Democrats have been unable to detract one iota from cither the honesty or fitness, or patriotism of Gen JOHN F. HARTRAXFT, for Governor, and Gen. HARRISON ALLEN, for Auditor Gen tral. They have never even attempted to in jure the honorable standing, of LEMUEL TOOD, GLENI W. SCOFIELD, or CIIAS. ALBRIGHT, our candidates for Congressmen at large, and they cannot pay a word against Maj ABRAHAM. B. HOWELL, our district can didatc for the same ofiice. FOIl GOVERNOR Vote for John F. Hartranft. CONGRESS ! The Republican conference at Kncchts, mi Wednesday, of last week, nominated Maj. Abtn. I. Howell, of Easton, for Con press. The Major is well qualified for the position and should certainly receive the mlid Republican vote of the District. He is ue of the country's heroes, andattested his love of country by leaving a leg on the bat tle field. His opponent loved his country "n, but thought more of grumbling at the g verr.mcnt and enjoying the comforts ol i.cine, than taking a nearer view of battle Holds. Others beside Republicans will vote for Maj;r Howell, but not enough we fear, tu elect hiui. Morc's the pity. FOR AUDITOR GENERAL Vote for Harrison Allen. Ztu" The Democracy of of this county en joyed both an immense mad, and a great scare last week. The mad grew out of the extreme generosity exhibited by Luzerne county, in taking, after "little Pike" was served, all the Delegates to the Constitu tional Convention, and leaving "gallant Mon roe" out,;.'! the cold. The chairman of the Democratic County Standing Committee, vho had made up his mind to take a hand in Constitution mending, got very wrathy over the result, and with, some of his back ers from Middle SmithCeld concluded to hold an indignation meeting on Wednesday even ing and give Luzerne a heavy touch of Mon roe thunder for her meanness. Rut the ele ments, and waut of numbers of the same way of thinking, interfered to jirevent the meeting, and so the gallant chairman was compelled to wrap up his indignation and tarry it home with him, where it will be preserved, doubtless, for use on some other occasion The scare was the result of the nomination ty Maj. Howell, by the' Republicans, for Congress. Broadway X. Y., never presen ted a more animated appearance than did our Main street for the several days succeed ing the nomination, caused by the running to and fro of scared Democrats. 32ven the services of the sanctuary and the sanctity of the Sabbath were forgotten, and a friend concluded that all the religious services of the day were centered at the Monroe Democrat Office, judging from the rush to that quarter about bell ringing time. The result of the scare was the withdrawal of Geu. Burnett, and the leaving the Democratic portion of the fight to Storm alone. Rumor has it, that, in the settlement of the "vexed question," our favorite candidate for Congressional honors, Amandus Orevus came very near coming to the surface as the coming man. His name was mentioned by the high, contracting parties, and he was ready and willing for the sacrifice, but the mention of his name was all that came of it, and Amandus Orcvus staj-s at home. What a pity. - FOR JUDGE OF SUPREME COURT Yoto for Ulysses Mercuiv FOR CONGRESS Vote for Abraham B. Howell. Court Proceedings. At the closing of our report in our last issue, the Court was engaged in the case of Commonwealt h vs. James H elsh, for desert ing his wife and daughter, a young lady seventeen years of age. It seems the parties have not lived very happily to gcthcr for several years and finally operated about a year ago, by J ames refusing to allow his wife or daughter, to come to his house and habitation in the township of Coolbaugh ; and since the complaint made by her against him, he has refused to provide in any man ner for their support. The parties were both in good staiidinj in this communit', consequently considerable interest was taken in the case, a large number of witnerses were called on both sides and the case, for nearly two days, warmly and ably conducted by-the legal geutlemen concerned. The Court held James to bail, with security, in $1000 to appear at next Court, to have a fitiial disposition made of the case, and at the same time gave him to understand that he must provide in the future for the support of his wife and child. The attorneys in the case were Walton, Buructt and Holmes for Com monwealth, Davis and Storm for DefendauU Cornelia Marvin vs. David Marvin. An action brought to recover interest on dower due Cornelia Marvin, widow of Marvin After a full investigation of the ease the jury returned a verdict in favor of the defendant for $8,80. Holmes for plaintiff, Lee for deft. Commonwealth vs. Anna Hawk, Emma Hawk and Ellen Hawk. Assault and Battery. Commonwealth vs. Jona Dotter, Nelson Dotter, Chas. Dotter and Hannah Dotter. Assault and Battery. These were cross actions growing out of the same transaction and for the same assault and battery; and after a full trial lefore the same jury, they find in each case the defendants not guilty, and direct in one case Daniel Hawk nd Amanda Hawk, the prosecutors, to pay the costs, and in the other case that Hannah Dotter pay the costs. Sentenced accordingly. Holmes and Burson for Commonwealth, Davis for Deft's. Commonwealth vs. Geo. Ray. Fornication and Bastardy. Grand Jury returned bill Ig noramus, and directed Martha Jones, the pros ecutor to pay the costs. Commonwealth vs. Henry Tlace. Indict ment, assault and battery, on the body of John Vanauken. Defendant pleads guilty, and sentenced to pay fine of $20 and costs. Commonwealth vs. B. H. Albert. Fornica tion and Bastardv. Tarries bound over for. their appearance at next terra. Commonwealth vs. Joseph Swink. Assault and battery on the body of Henry Houser. Grand Jury return the bill Ignoramus and di rected Henry Houser, the prosecutor, to pay the costs. Commonwealth vs. James II. Kerr. Indict ment for cruelty to animals, in throwing a stone that put out the eye of a Bull, belonging to Emery Norton, Esq. After a full trial the Jury returned the Defendant not guilty, but for reasons growing out of the evidence to show that James was to blame, they directed him to pay the costs. Holmes and Davis for Com monwealth, Burson and Burnett for Deft. After the Jurors were discharged the Argu ment List was taken up, which occupied the Court until late Saturday afternoon to dispose of. FOR SENATOR Vote for John H. Van Etten. T!ic popato crop is nearly all dug out of the ground. Tlierc have been heavy frosts in Illinois and Iowa. Most all kinds of game can now be shot legally, in this county. Tlic Premium, the first premium, and tue only premium given to sewing machines at the Monroe Couuty Fair, last week, notwithstanding the fact that the Domestic, the A. B. Howe and the G rover and Baker cornsheller, with operators and got up work imported for the occasion were in competition, was awarded to the Wheeler and "Wilson machine. The committee, com posed of practical mechanics and experts, after giving each machine a thorough ex amination, were constrained to say, that for excellence of workmanship, and durability the Wheeler and Wilson, was by far the best. It was evident to all that some of the agents had mistaken their proper location. The things they exhibited there would have had a better place, decidedly, among the agricultural implements. ep. 2fi, '72-4t. James Boys, Agent. Go to Simon Fried's for hats and caps. Republican Congressional Con ference. Joseph F. Marccr and Charles T. Ycrkes, of Philadelphia, who were some months ago sen tenced to a long period of confinement in the Eastern Penitentiary, were on Friday last re leased by a pardon from Governor Gearv. This act has been cxjccted for some time, and its probability was looked upon with general f.tvor bv the community. It was felt that Mar ccr and Yeikes had been made to suffer for what had been the general practice, without objection, among those who had held similar trust. Whatever offence they committed ha? been fully expiated by their imprisonment. The Inquirer, which is one of the strongest ad vocates of municipal reform, says that this par don is "eminently just and projer"; and it as sures Gov. Geary that "he never signed a par don with more gratification to the public than those of Marcer and Ycrkes." Political. The Republican Congressional con ferees, Senator Fitch aud Representative Stephen?, of Susquehsnnrf; and Messrs A. B.
