Mrstenes and Miseries of a Mad House
Sane Persons Immured In Bloomingdale
Insane Asylnm.
A ooce promioeot banker of this city
yesterday nude nis reappearance after
.;een months' absence, during which
he has been confined in the IRootuingdale
i nnitic Asylum, though to ail appear-
inces, and according to the admission of
the keepers, ne is unquestionably sane.
He was arrested lat year while sitting at
his breakfast table, and was taken, with
out a word of explanation, to the asylum
although subjected to no special in
jjnity, he says that the treatment of the
insane by the keepers is simply revolting.
He kept a miuute diary of all that oc
rflrrcd during his iticarcetatio'rJ, and has
iVeo it to his lawyer, John D. Townseud,
who will make it the basis of an affidavit
bo which to begin procedings in behalf of
hc gentleman named and three ladies,
who will be brought before the court on
t writ of habeas corpus next week. The
affidavits of all these persons, and of a
former keeper at the asylum, will also be
i,reeoted to the grand jury for the purT
Le of securing an investigation into th?
jnaoageiuent of the institution. Mr.
Tuwuscud, in conversation yesterday with
' reporter, stated that the geutletnan just
released had not been discharged on
habeas, for ad soon as it became known
t the asylum that proceedings were to
it taken in court, word was sent that the
prisoner was sufficiently recovered and
iJ been released.
Mr. Townseod said he had instructed
liii client not to accept of voluntary
reUne, for the reason that to avoid iu
4iirj the superintendent of the asylum
diicharges those lor whom habeascs are
uueJ in order to make return of 'not in
custody" to the writ. In three instances,
he said, iu which he bad sued out writs,
premature dismissals by the superintend
dent had prevented publicity being given
tj revolting cases of the incarceration of
saue persons without even the lorm of law.
He mentioned the cases of au elderly lady
from Xew Jersey, committed by her son,
who made no opposition to her release ;
and another of a merchant, who, after
many months' confinement, was dismissed
Lefore the habeas could be served, and
who is uow doing business in the city,
and as sane as aoy other merchant in it.
The gentleman who was dismissed
ynterday was never treated medically
during his entire imprisonment, and his
tninoer and general intelligence prohibit
the belief that he is of unsound mind.
He dues not yet know by whom he was
incarcerated or oa whoe medical certi
Ccate, but hit lawyer visited the asylum
at a late hour jesterday to examine the
paers in his case, and those of the thrac
ladies alluded to, in whom the geutleman
released takes sympathetic internet, and
who are declared by him to be sane.

THE COAL MARKET.
Persons who burn coal and almost
ererjbody does it, either individually or
ricariously occasionally extracts aome
eomfort from the reports of the mouthly
tales of the fuel iu large quantities at
New Xork. Scraotoo docs not wait for
the market. Scraotoo makes the market
lad, by puttiug up large quantities of
black diamond at lorced sales, may pos
libly sell at cheaper rates than might be
obtaiued if she would wait. Jut Scran
ton understands the value of the old
adage which teaches that the nimble six
peuce has an advantage over the slow
hilling. Sho loses as little interest as
possible upon her investments ; she pre
fers money iu hand, or payable on short
erebit, to waiting for the prioe of coal to
go up, and she disposes of what she has
io that she may prosecute her iudustry,
and io another month have on band
another large lot of coal ready to be

wauna lUilroad Company, which re
preaeola Sera ut on in this business, takes
the tluncea, aud she furnishes the
thermometer by which the consumers of
ctl endeavor to judge whether the
price which they are to pay will be high
ir low. Looking at this test of values
and contrasting the sales at the eud cf
Julj with those at the end of June we
find that the difference is so little that
romumcrs need not hope that the mid
die me a will uake any allowances for them.
Aa average decline on the different quali

frnmiae of benefit to ;bose who use the
rticle. We may consider it settled that
oal will not be any cheaper during the
fconth of August than it has heretofore
taeo, tod those persons who have been
waiting to reach the heapest point io
rder to lay ia their winter supply will
probably find that the best economy
bich they can practice is to submit to
farther delay and to obtain their stock
sooa as possible.

Heart, Inflammation of the Lnngs, Pain in the regions of
the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms,
are the offsprings of Dyspepsia. In these complaints
it has no equal, and one bottle will prove a better guar
antee of its merits than a lengthy advertisement.
For Female Complaints, in young or old,
Married or single, at the dawn of womanhood, or the
turn of life, these Tonic Bitters display so decided aa
influence that a marked improvement is soon percep
tible. For Inflatnntotorjr and Chronle Risen
Mat Ism and Gout, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Uiliout,
Remittent and Intermittent Fevers, Diseases of the
Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, these Bitters have
beea most successful. Such Diseases are caused by
Vitiated Blood, which is generally produced by derange
ment of the Digestive Organs.
They are a Ceutle Purgative oa well oa
a Tonic, possessing also the peculiar merit of acting
as a powerful afent in relieving Congestion or Inflam

Diseases.
For Skin Diseases, Eruptions, Tetter, Salt

and Diseases of the Skin, of whatever name or nature,

short time by the use of these Hitters. One bottle in
such cases will convince the must iucredulous of their
curative effects.
Cleauae the Vitiated Blood whenever you
find its impurities bursting through the skin in Pimples,
Eruptions, or Sores; cleanse it when you find it ob
structed and sluggish in the veins ; cleanse it when it is
foul ; your feelings will tell you when. Keep the blood
pure, and the health of the system wiil follow.
Grateful thousmiile proclaim Vinkgah Bit
ters the most wonderful Invigorant that ever sustained
the sinking system.
Pin, Tape, and other Worms, lurking in
the system of so many thousands, are effectually de
stroyed and removed. Says a distinguished physiol
ogist: There is scarcely an individual upon the face of the
earth whose body isexempt from the presence of worms.
It is not upon the healthy elements of the body that
worms exist, but upon the diseased humors and slimy
deposits that breed these living monsters of disease.
No system of Medicine, no vermifuges, no anthelmin
tics, will free the system from worms like these Bit
ters. Bleehanleal Disease. Persons engaged in
Paints and Minerals, such as Plumbers, Type-setters,
Gold-beaters, and Miners, as they advance in life, will
be subject to paralysis of the Bowels. To guard against
this take a dose of Walker's Vinkgar Bitters once
or twice a week, as a Preventive.
Bilious, Remittent, a net Intermittent
Fevers, which are so prevalent in the valleys of our
great rivers throughout the United States, especially
those of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois. Ten
nessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Red, Colorado, Brazos,
Rio Grande, Pearl, Alabama, Mobile, Savannah, Roan
oke, James, and many others, with their vast tributa
ries, throughout our entire country during the Summer
and Autumn, and remarkably so during seasons of
unusual heat and dryness, are invariably accompanied
' by extensive derangements of the stomach and liver, and
Other abdominal viscera. There are always more or less
obstructions of the liver, a weakness and irritable state
of the stomach, and great torpor of the bowels, being
clogged up with vitiated accumulations. In their treat
ment, a purgative, exerting a powerful influence upon
these various organs, is essentially necessary. There is
no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dr. J. WalkbVs
Vinegar Bitters, as they will speedily remove the
dark-colored viscid matter with which the bowels are
loaded, at the same time stimulating the secretions of
the liver, and generally restoring the healthy functions
of the digestive organs.
Scrofala, or King's Evil, White Swellings,
Ulcers. Erysipelas, Swelled Neck, Goiter, Scrofulous
Inflammations, Indolent Inflammations, Mercurial Af
fections, Old Sores, Eruptions of the Skin, Sore Eyes,
etc., etc In these, at m all other constitutional Dis
eases, Walker's Vinegsr Bitters have shown their
great curative powers in the most obstinate and intract
able cases.
Dr. Walker's California Vinegar Bitter
act on all these cases in a similar manner. By purifying
the Blood they remove the cause, and by resolving away
the effects of the inflammation (the tubercular deposits)
the affected parts receive healtli, and a permanent cure
is effected.
Tho properties of Dr. Walker's Vinegar
Bitters are Aperient. Diaphoretic and Carminative,
Nutritious, Laxative, Diuretic, Sedative, Counter-irritant.
Sudorific, Alterative, and Anti-Bilious.
The Aperient and mild Laxative properties of
Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitters are the best safe
guard in all cases of eruptions and malignant fevers,
their balsamic, healing, and soothing properties protect
the humors of the fauces. Their Sedative properties
allay pain in the nervous system, stomach, and bowels,
either from inflammation, wind, colic, cramps, etc.
Their Counter-irritant influence extends throughout
the system. Their Diuretic properties act on the Kid
neys, correcting and regulating the flow of urine. Their
Anti-Bilious properties stimulate the liver, in the secre
tion of bile, and its discharges through the biliary ducts,
and are superior to all remedial aseuts, for the cure of
Bilious Fever, Fever and Ague, etc
Fortify tlie body sgslntt diftease bv puri
fying all its fluids with Vinegar Bitteks. No epi
demic can take hold of a system thus forearmed. The
liver, the stomach, the bowels, the kidneys, and the
nerves are rendered disease-proof by this great in vig
ors nt.
Directions. Take of the Bitters on going to bed
at night from a half to one and one-half wine-glasfulL
Eat good nourishing food, such as beef steak, mutton
