The Sagacity of Dogs.
Dogs retukable for sagacity exist in re
gions "where alligators abound. For in
stance when oue of them wishes to cross
a river where the alligators are he goes
up the stream a good way up aud barks
with all his might ; the alligators go there
and wait lor him getting in to ewiui acroes.
The dog knows what he is about when he
sees, from the number of snoots above
watr, that his enemies have all gathered
to the feast, runs down the bank as fast
as he can, and swims across before the
alligators are aware of the trick that has
been jdayed upon them.
1 Gold in the Country.
The total product of gold and silver in
tke United States for the year 1870, as
estimated by Mr. II. W. Raymond, United,
States Commissioner of Mining Statistics,
reaches $60,000,000, California contribut
ing $25,000,000, and -Nevada 516,000,
000, to this amount. In addition to the
bnlliou exported and that coined, a large
smount of the precious metals is used in
manufactures here. Gold to the value of
from 30,000,000, to S13.000.000, is used
annuall by jewelers and others, a part of
which is coin, however, while silver-smiths
and silver platers melt up large qnantities
of hue silver bar .Mr. Raymonds
estimates of the gold and ei'vc produc
tion are higher thau those which have
been generally accepted, but he has
evidently taken great pains to arrive at
accurate coocIumous, and h3 gives with
clearness and at length the method by
which he has reached the fi ure3 which
he assumes to be correct.
Here is an item for Doctors who may
be called to treat usually unmanageable
disease, diphtheria. At Lewistown, Me.,
a factory girl suffering from the complaint
was attacked by a severe Dt of strangling
and coughing, when the nurse veuturing
to put her fingers down the patient's
throat, seized the end of something which
appeared loose there, and pulled out the
false membrane. This presence of mind
saved the sufferer. Dr. Hill now has the
membrane in his possession. It is three
inches in length, completely preserved,
Mtid retains the shape of the air passage
from which it was withdrawn. The Glm
is a thick, white, leathery substance. It
h is been before thought that diphthera
and its kindred diseases might be suc
cessfully treated by mechanical operations,
and croup has been socjeiimes conquered
by the surgeon. Diphthria is becoming
so common and is so difficult of cure, that
the above facts are given fjr what they
lu ay be worth.
A New Thing in Philosophy White
Man Turnirg Black.
The San Francisco Examiner says a
gentleman of that city, almost twenty five
rears of aje. ruddy complexion and curlv
red h-jir, who had an intractable and pain
ful ulcer mi the left arm, resisting all pre
vious modes of treatment, yielded to the
req'ict of tryiu:; the efTect of transplant
ing a piece of skin to the uleer from an
other person. The ulcer was prepared
in the usual manner by his physician,
and a bit of skin about an inch square
w:t t;iken from the arm of a hue healthy
rero man and immediately spread over
the 'ily ulcer, and then carefully dressed
and t'ltidaged. j he tkin transplantation
h id the desired efTect. Healthy granula
li jn sprang up, and the unsightly ulcer
fc:on healed. A few months afterwards
be went to his physician and told him
tint ever since the sore healeJ the black
skin commenced to spread, and it was in
creasing. About one-third of his arm
wn completely neuroed. The doctor him
self is alarmed. The high probability is
that the whole skin of this white man will
become negro. This i-s a new thing uu
der the sun. It would be rather difficult
to explain the physiological process which
t:ikes place to bring about such a skin
change as this. The problem is, how can
the coloring matter of the skin be so radi
caily changed ? And how is this pi
meut change propagated ? It is certain
that the law of capillary attraction plays
no lusigniuearit part m the spreading pro
rpes. Grafting pears on au apple tree
bis communicated to the apples a pear
taste.

The Detriot Free Press, of the 4th
inst ., gives the following account of how
the hunter became the hunted :
A man named Chas. Tyrell was hunt
ing on the bt. ( lair river when two
bears appeared. Somewhat excited, lie
levelled his rifle and fired, and the next
moment both the bears were coming down
upou him at full speed. The hunter saw
that they meant business, each uttering
fierce growls, and he dropped his gun,
caught hold of the limb of a small oak
tree, and swung his legs up just in time
to save bis boots. As he expected, one
oi them was not long in attempting lose
cure a closer acquaintance. The auiiual
got up about seven feet, and then limbs
refused to let him by. He pawed, bit.
and growled at a great rate, and, io'aiak
mg a big ettort to push away the limbs,
fell to the ground. Tyrell commenced
shouting, which excited the bears, and
wee of thea was quickly up to the limbs
again, wnen the hunter struck a match
ami dropped it down on bruin s head,
fiiehteuinir him so that he went l.7r.
the tree at a lively rate. The hunter had
about a dozen matches with him, and
every time the bears started to climb h
wouij iis-ht oue and let it fall, the trick
Bevcr failing to stop their ascent. After a
umtsoom seemed to go away, and the hun
ter carefully commenced to descend. lie
was just about to touch the ground when
Iclh the bears came charging; at hiui out
ui the darkness, aud he had to go up
again, one of his boots being raked by
!aws before he was above the limbs.' The
animals made no further effort, to climb
the tree, but tore around fur a full hour
at its- base. Tyrell dared not descend for
fei- that they had laid a snare for hici
and passed the entire night astride of a
limb. la tbe morning he foanj the bear
ie fiVed at dead at tle foot of the tree
but the other had disappeared, and the
twite r sot safely off with the spoil.
