AGRICULTURAL. Keep a Few Sheep. A correspondent of the Country Gen tlemnn pithily says : Some way or other agriculture seem." incomplete without a flock of sheep. They are essential to the thick set long evity cf the old grass land, and all the world over and in olden times they were esteemed as most important, and in the most Improved agricultural country, viz : Inland, 'hey are cherished by every far mer, from the highest to the lowest. The wool is one of the incomes which can not he dispensed with, and the flocks are so irianaged that the tes cut heavier and more valuable fleeces than older sheep ; in fact, te fleeces in England not only wcih thirty per cent, heavier than those of the ewes, but make ten or more per cent.' higher prices. If any tenant farmer in. the regular agricultural districts of England fanned without sheep, he would soon lose his crops, and nobody would reut to a man who did not practice sheep husbandry. Candy-EatiDg. 'Shall I let my children eat candy V is a question over which parents are some times puzzled. This is not surprising, for doctors and doctors books to ditler upon the question. Some teach that candy is an evil to be avoided ; others, who lue it themselves, say that white candies are at least harmless, aud may be eaten at dis cretion. Neither side is quite right. The chief injury that candies do, is that )f .spoiling the appetite for, other, food.; ' "When honestly made, colored candy is quite" harmless in itself. Thus the red cm lies are colored with beet juice. But it is safer on the whole to stick to the white candies, hich are made of starch and s'jar flavored, The love of sugar i? n natural and healthy appetite, especially in children, who need more saccharine in liter than growu persons. Yet they should not, be allowed to eat sugar to the exclusion of heartier food. By devour ing candy in large quantities between meals the' spoil their appetite, and olten injure their digestiou. This is the only prions objection to candy eating. A good rule iu the matter is to prevent the child jtoni e-uing candy so near meal times as t t make him leave a full plate of break t-.t or dinner. Hut after a meal he can cat as much as he chooses without pre occupying his appetite for the next. (iou candy, eaten at the right time, is csc-'lleut food. Hearth and II vie. " Ho?7 Paper Collars are Mads. The following arc the processes through which a piece of paper has to pass in or ier to become a fashionable article of wearicg apparel, as a collar or cuff for a Ia-.iy or gentleman : First the paper must le aia-!e expressly for the object design e l, and prepared with direct reference to its weL'ht, strength, color and flexibility; it has to be linen finisheT, by having ap plied to it a coating of whiting mixed with :lue, and passed over hot cylenders t give it the requisite polish ; then it is j .n cre 1 with a linen cloth, or in some i-c.s has the fac simile of cloth engraved ijvn ir, snd t lie impression of the linen i- thus transferred to the paper. Xext, the paper is divided into sheets or rolls i T the required dimensions, and cut by chi nc ry into the proper shape or col Lis cr cuifs. The machine also makes v"'U-u holes, and creates the collar where ii !c le folded ; a gill folds the end of the pillar and passes it between rapidly rc' lvi-ig wheels, which either fold or roll it into its curved form, as may be de fired. If the collar is to have the bultoD holes patched, as it is called, it is ncces ;ry, before it is rolled, to have three f-:na!l pieces of perforated cloth affixed, which cover the holes and give theru ad flition il strength. The collar or cuff rtiust also 0 through a machine for finish in:: the edge, whether that border i to represent stitching or is to imitate a rais eJ cj:.1 or tuck. Ectv Apple Trees Grow. If wc make n dcen hole, with a crow bar in the substratum of the earth, fill i! with PL'nd sind mellow soil and nhint an p!e see 1 in autumn near the suface of the ground where the hole was made; the nest spring the seeds will throw out a root directly downuard, until the end fBuchcs the strata of perpetual moisture. a root cannot extend -further; and astern will commence pushiog upward, at the anse tiine hearing the apple seeds on the cua, to the surlace, where the kernel will separate into c,iu:il niirts forming the seed leaf of the young tree. Meanwhile, the tap root continues to obtain a more hnn hold of the soil which fortifies the tree against injury ineideut to dry weather. In a congenial Foil, resting on a porus subsoil, tnp root of a tree of most any kiud, will extend farther, by actual ineas urctucnt. into the earth, when the tree i three or fyur year? old, then the top has j;rowu upward. Hut, when the tree? have been produced from pieces of root planted in nursery rows, they rarely send down tap roots Consequently such trees can be taken up and transplanted for more a dvautngeou?ly that if the tap root was severed aud left in the ground. So long as vegetation does not suffer from pro traded drouths it will inaka do difference whether the tree has a top-root or not. jJut when the roots ccar the surface can not imbibe one drop of moisture out of the dry soil, if there be no tap root to bring up moisture to the leaves, the fruit must fail, and the tree will receive such injury that the half formed buds can not vield fruit the season. Every tree ought to spring from the seed where the tree is to trrow. If a hole a few feet deep, and filled with soda or mellow, soil, and an ap ple seed or a pear seed, chestnut or hick ory-nut, were planted in autumn, and the soil kept clean, or were mulched duriug the summer, when the land is poor, a tree would push upward over twenty feet iu one decade of years ; and if the ground were rich it would grow thirty feet ia the same period.
