Steam Food a Preventative of Hog
Cholera.
An exchange says: "Several very ex
tensiro hog growers of llcnry Co., 111..
Kiy that feeding steamed feed is a perfect
preventive of the hog cholera, and that
no one there this season, who fed steamed
feed, has lost a hog by the cholera." We
seriously doubt if it is the food alone that
preveuts the hog cholera. Our obser
vation is that with a wholesome diet there
must be care, shelter, day pasturage aud
good, pure water.
Lice on Poultry.
Take out of the house every perch,
nest, box, or movable tiling ; remove all
battens, cleats, or any thing whereby a
crevice is made, so that the inside is
smooth. Then make a whitewash of fresh
1 me 'into which put one ounce of carbolic
acid to a pailful. Wash the house
thoroughly with this. Theu wash the
outside. Then smear the perches with a
mixture of lard and kerosene oil, putting
it on thick, so that when the fowls roost
they will get some of it on their feathers
Also, put some of it on each fowl, under
the wings. 1 his will clear the house, and
the hens will clear themselves if no
recruits are furnished from the house.

do one thing at a time, and when it is

Cariosities of Earth.
At the city of Mediua, in Italy, and
about four miles around it, wherever the

at a distance of sixty-three feet they come
to a bed of chalk, which they bore with

hulls, aud the bed is eleven feet thick.

The following will give our readers
who are interested au idea of the way to
j'pL'C the age of fowls :
If a hen's spur is hard, and the scales
on the legs rough, she is old, whether
you see her head or not, but her head
will corroborate your observation. If the
underbill is so stiff that you cannot bend
it down, and the comb thick and rough,
leave her, do matter how fat and plump,
for some one less particular. A young
hen has only the rudimeuts of spurs ; the
scales on the legs are smooth glossy and
fresh colored, whatever the color may be ;
the claws tender and short the nails sharp,
the uuderbill soft, and the comp thin and
smooth.
An old hen turkey has rough scales od
the legs, callo.sites on the soles of the feet,
and lung strong claws; a young oue the
reverse of those marks. When the feutli.
ers are on the old turkey cock has a long
tuft or beard, a young one but a sprout
ing one : and when thev are off. thp
smooth scales on the leg decide the point,
re&Ues the diherence in size of the wat
ties of the neck and in the clastic shoot
upon the nose.
An old goose when alive is known by
the rough legs, the strengh of the wings
particularly at the pinions, the thickness
and strength of the bill, and the fineness
fcf the feathers ; and when plucked, by
the legs, the tenderness of the skin under
the wings, by the pinions aud the bill and
the coarseness of the skin.
Ducks are distinguished by the same
means, but there is this difference that
a duckling's bill is much longer in pro
portion to the breadth of its head than
the old ducks.
A young pigeon is discovered by its
pale color, smooth scales, tender, collaps
ed feet, a!?d the yellow, long down iu
terspersed among its feathers. A pigeon
that can fly has always red coloredJegs
and o down, and is then too old for uJe
"T ain't going to live long, mother,"
said a woebegone looking youngster, oue
day, to his maternal parent. "Why not,
pray?" ''IJecause my pantaloons is all
