Big Raid of Prison Birds. Sino Sing, N. Y., March 18 Two seri ous breaks were made by the convicts at this pri.-on to-day. rlie first occurred be tween three and four o'clock this morning At that hour Air. Thomas Forrest, one ol the niht keepers, proceeded to cells No. 13, 23, and 81, and unlocked them, letting out convicts Decker, Lockwood, Mullery, Mul ler, and John Bwrnss to take them to the mess to get break fji-t for ihe other convicts. Soon after leaving; the cells, and when pass ing through the chapel, two of the convict; seized and struck Forrest and gauged him, J.iying" hirn down and passing on to the mess room, where Edwin Craft the night guard, was stationed. They eUo seized and gauged him, and then all five oftheramade their escape from the roof. When Craft was found he was dead, having been strangled by the gag- and was laying on his face. The alarm was given nnd every effort was fnnde to re-arrest the escaped convict. They succeeded m nesting1 two, Burns and Mullery, in a barn at Tarry town. Forrest's injuries were but blight, the convicts secn ing to have taken cire not to hurt him, lie vas, however, eccurely gscged, and his liands anl feet were tied. About oneo'clock this afternoon another attempt was made by Another suad -ef convicts to get away, which Was more desperate than W'.e 6ret. At that tiour three convicts epproacired the guard ; yn the middle dock, saying they had a pass; hey wished t skow him. lie -advanced; viliwttt his fcrfts, when they ipimcdkteJf adianced towards hinft with huge knives. lie rushed for his musket lot vas soon wer-! ruswered, though not hurt, when the three co.'ivkls now joined by other?, tmVds? rush 3'or iIaj s?wp Exchange which tv" lying at the dock hden with lambed. Provided with rins seileA from I've g oa?J house, they or dered the tntft'o Ifcft vessel and attempted to junpcA ttfara. Uy this time the alarm ijsi 5pretd and a fresh arrival of guards Ctme upon the scene and rapid firing of muskets began, soni3 twenty shots in all be- iiij: fired. The convicts beinjr unable to .get the vessel away from the dock, and see ing that they were overpowered, succummed nn J were taken back to prson. The fol lowing H a lis.t of the injured : James Mc Cauley, t-hot three times in the body, will probibly not recover; a convict named Allen was alto badly hurt. The slightly injured are Timothy Donovan, Daniel O'Connell, Eiward McGrinn, Donnelly, and Miller. The two who are dangerously injured were recently sent here for twenty years from New York City. Coronor McEntee, ofCro ton, is now holding an inquest over the body of Craft. It is not expected that a verdict will be reached to-day. Whilethe noon re bellion was going on it was thought that a general revolt was about to transpire. There lore a telegram was sent to Sing Sing vil lage for help. It was responded to imme diately ty hundreds of men, armed with all nrts of we j pons, and the excitement was great. This aficrnoon all is quiet, rind will prob ably remain so through the night. None of the guard or officers of the prison were hurt. Among the appointments made last week by President Graut was that of Mrs. Van Lew, to Le post mistress at Rich mond, Virginia, it is said this lady rcn dered valuable services to the Govern mem during the war, frequently aiding our prisoners to escape from rebel dun geons and sending slaves through the lines with important information to Gen. Granc. It is owing mainly to this that the appointment was made. MARKIED. At the Lutheran Par.-onage, in Hamilton, on the 13th in.-it., by the Rev.
