The Fair.
The Ninth Annual Fair of the Monroe
County Agricultural Society, came off last
week, as per announcement. The first was
a beautiful day, in every sense of the word ;
but, as with all first days, it waamerely pre
liminary, and waa devoted more to getting
ready for what waa to come than to exhibi
tion. .
On Wednesday it rained, and glom faces
attested the idea which reigned within, that
for once the Fair of the Society waa to be a
failure. Directora and Managers hoked
blue, sports and owners of f-st e'ock look
ed sorrowful, and hucksters, side-show and
flying-coach men looked as though oysters
showed any thing but a foum-ward tenden
cy, and that business waa at a discount.
On Thursday morning the atom held up,
and by noon the general aspect of the wea
ther waa such aa to lignt up the faces and
prospects of all, and soon, especially among
lbe aide showmen and hucksters, babel broke
loose, and the Fair waa in full blast.
Friday waa a fine day, and 'the big day,"
and the presence of thousands made it appa
rent that the interest of the people in the
Society, its Fairs and it object, had not aba
ted a single jet or tittle, but that this Fair,
and all coming Fairs, would meet a liberal
patronage.
On Saturday, a day added because of the
rain on Wednesday, although the wind blew
"great guns," and the blasts swept by as
though ladened with a cargo "from Green
land's icy mountains," there waa a good at
tendance, and a general, jolly good time.
John Barleycorn was there too, slightly, and
owing to the "peculiar circumstance, Sat
urday waa a day of fun, with but one quar
rel and neither blood rpilled nor bones broken.
