. Our friend Darlington, of the Doyles
town IntcUigcncf-r. alter aUeudinr to hid
duties as delegate to the Chicago Conven
tion, went Westward, and upon his re
turn gave an interesting review of agri
cultural affaifa in the country through
"which he passed, lie says: "In the
"victinity of Lawrence, Kansas, during the
last week in May, sonic of the corn was u
.Foot high, the early potatoes were nearly
fit to dig, the peas and oiher early garden
vegetables were in full bearing, and the
wheat fields were already assuming the
golden tinge of approaching ripeness
The prairie grass was as high as one's
'knees, and the horned cattle and sheep
had been reveling npon it since the be
ginning of March. This advanced state
jf vegetation, it was said; was rather ex
ceptionalthe spring having this year!
I 11.. 1 T J
vjici-tu uiiutumiy tany. Lawrence is
nearly in the latitude of Washington city
In Southern Kansas the season wds in i
tatc ef still greater forwardness, and peo
were already beginning to cut th
prairie grass for hay. Very little culti
vated or tame grass is to be found in that
country. Coming cast through Missouri
to St. Louis, the couditiou of vegetation
was nearly the same as in Kansas. Plea
ly of ripe cherries and strawberries grown
iu the vicinity, where for sale on the
streets. In ceutral Illinois the corn was
not so large, but looked healthy and thrif
ty. It was all planted by machinery, of
ten in j-uch a tnanuer that it would be
very diCicult for a crow or cut worm to
follow a row froai one end to the other
A very common practice is to harrow the
gronud over thoroughly after the corn is
plantccd, which docs not disturb the seed
but kills the young weeds and makes the
top mellow and easily penetrated by the
wots. Grass and wheat appeared to be
be very vigorous. Throughout Illinois
and Iowa Fpring wheat is mostly grown,
being often sowu after corn without plow
ing. It is also sown in the fall, upon
praire which. has been broken up in the
j-pring or summer. In northern Ohio
the season was apparently much later.
Little corn was to be seen iu the grouud,
nearly all had been planted. The forests
were uot yet in full leaf, and many fruit
trce3 were still in blossom. This was the
case until the Allegheny ridge was reach
ed, on the eastern side of which the
spring seemed to be more advanced and
vegetation of all kinds belter developed.
In the Weit, crops of all kinds look cz
c.'cdiugly well. I'cyond l'ennsvlvan'a
magnificent fields of spring and wiuter
wheat are constantly seen, ar.d a nio t
bounteous harvest seems to be at hand.
Kacsr.s has never heretofore been able to
supply her population of 200,000 per
sous with bread from her own soil, but
this year she is pretty sure to do it.
More beautiful fields of wheat than are
now ripening on the fruithful bottoms of
of the Kansas river were never beheld.
A very large extent of corn has also been
planted, aud unless great disasters should j
intervene, the agricultural prodec:s of
the West this year will surpass all pre
cedents. Fruit tree look remarkably
hcalty, and arc full of promi.se. In the
Mississippi valley, and beyond it, the ap
jjlc tree is much more healthy and luiu
riant than with us, and the fruit is rapid
ly becoming abundant. Orchards cf
greater or less extent are being set out
on nearly every farm, and adispesitioa to
promote fruit culture is observable every
where. In Missouri, especially, the graj e
is . receiving great attention, and "vinc
clad bills' frequently tccur along the
route cf travel.
At the recent dinner of the I'eausyl
raDia iState Medical Society, Dr. Wash-
iiiirtoo L. Atlee. of Philadelphia, spoke
eloquently of the rights of women in the
medical profession. lie severely rebuked
those who pronounced woman incapable,
or unfit, or ill adapted for the profession
of medicine, or those who pronounced her
inferior, but who had beeu made all they
were by their mothers. The language
used in the Convention against women,
he said, bad disgraced the society.

lias a loose pole and no pressure on the
horse's nock. Has an elevating lever for
raising the bar. The bar can be retained
at any required heighth without tho assist
ance of the driver, and can be securely fold
ed for transportation. The Cutt r-bar, in
front of driver, is mounted on wheels which
reduces the friction, and by means of which
the height of cut can be regulated. TJic
patented draft arrangement prevents side
draft, and enables the Cutters to pass in and
out of furrows with ease and safety. The
Guards are of malleable iron, steel faced;
are pheed near together oa the Bar and
form a protection to the Cutters, and are
warranted not to break. The Bar and
Frame are raised at the same time and ob
structions passed, between the wheels, as
hMi as the axle. The working parts and
Bar always retain the same relative position;
there is, therefore, no unnatural strain or
wear on the rearing or knife bar, as is the
case in other machines. Every machine is
warranted. '
