    Tn his annual report, Mr.' Gilchrist, sa
pertcndent of public schools of Washing
ton couuty, says : "Perhaps few counties
have such agencies for caucation as U ash
inpton two colleges, now consolidated,
ana soon to be anion; the greatest in our
land ; two celebrated female seminaries,
and seveaal valuable academics. The
Southwestern Normal School at Cali
fornia is in a flourishing condition, and
is educating two hundred teachers an
nually. Xew buildings are in process of
erection, and ere long the State will own
it as another of her institutions.
