sued their precept to me commanding that
a Court of Quarter Sessions of the Peace and
Common Plea, and Court of Oyer and Ter
miner and Oeneral Jail Delivery and Or
phan's Court, for the said County of Monroe,
to be holden at Stroudsburg, on the 27th day
of May, 1667, to continue one weeks if
necessary.

Is hereby given to the Cononer, the Justices
of the Peace, and Constables of the said coun
ty of Monroe, that they be then and there
ready with their rolls, records, inquisitions,
examinations and other remembrances to do
those things which their offices are appertai
ning, and also that those who are bound by
recognizances to prosecute and give evidence
against the prisoners that are or shall be in
the jail if the said county of Monroe, or a

STAMP DUTIES.
. As Amended by Act of Congress.
Approved March 2d, 1867. -
Instruments are not to be recorded un
less properly stamped and cancelled.
No instrument is invalid for the want
of the particular kind of stamps designa
ted provided a legal stamp of equal
amount, (except Proprietary stamps,) is
duly affixed..
All instruments, doeumcnts and papers
issued or used by officers of the Uuited
States Government, or by the officers of
any State, county or other municipal cor
poration, are exempt.
In cases where an adhesive stamp
shall be used for denoting any duty im
posed by this Act, the person using or
affixing the same, shall write thereon the
initials of his name, and date upon which
the 8ae shall be attacbed or used, so
that the same may not again be used,
under a penalty of $50. "
Postage Stamps cannot be used as Ilev-
;cnuc stamps.
ro deed, instrument, writing, or paper,
required by law to be stamped, which has
been signed, or issued without being du
ly stamped, or with a deficient stamp,
nor any copy thereof, shall be recorded,
or admitted, or used as evidence iu any
court until a legal stamp or stamps, de
noting the amount of tax, shall have been
affixed therete as prescribed, by law.
The. party to whom a document is is
sued from a foreign country or by whom
it is to be used, shall, before using tho
same, affix thereon the stamp or stamps
indicating the duty required.
Proprietors of Cosmetics, Medicines, or
Proprietary Articles, may furnish private
dies, and are allowed 5 per cent, on all
purchases of $500; over $500, 10 per
cent.
AFFIDAVITS
are exempt from stamp duty.

empt from duty.
EXEMPTIONS.
No stamp duty shall be required on
powers of attorney or any other paper relat--ing
to application for bounties, arrears
ages of pay, or pensions, or property lost
in the service ; or upon tickets or con
tracts of insurance when limited to injury
to persons while travelling ; Nor on cer
tificates of the measurement of weight of
animals, wood, coal, or hay ; nor on de
posite notes to mutual insurance compan
ies for the insurance upon which polices
subject to stamp duties have been or are
to be issued ; nor on any warrant of at
tory accompanying a bond or note, when
such bt)ndor'notc shall have affixed there
to the stamp or stamps denoting the duty
required ; and whenever any bond or note
shall be secured by a mortgage, but one
stamp duty shall be required to be placed
on such papers ; nor on any certificate oC
the record of a deed or other instrument
in writiug, or of the acknowledgement or
proof thereof by attesting witoesses ; nor
to any indorsement of a negotiable instru
ment. Provided, That the stamp duty placed:
thereon shall be the highest rate requir
ed for said instruments, or either of them.
Receipts by express companies for the
delivery of any property for transporta
tion are exempt from stamp duty. -Affidavits
are exempt from stamp duty.
PENALTIES.
Penalty for making, signing, or issuing"
any instrument, document, or paper of
any kind whatsoever, or shall aceept, ne
gotiate, or pay, or cause to be accepted,
negotiated or paid any bill of exchange,,
draft or order, or proraissery note, for the
payment of money, without the same be"'
ing duly stamped, fjr denoting the duty
hereby imposed thereon $50; and the
instrument shall be deemed invalled and
of no effect : or for counterfeiting stamps
or dies $1,000, 'and imprisonment at
hard labor not exceeding five years. For

How to Preserve Furs.
As the season has arrived when it be
comes necessary to lay furs aside and pre
serve them from their ravishers, tho
nieths, following hints may be useful to'
our lady readers : One ounco of gum
camphor and one ounce of powdered shell
of red jepper are macerated iu eight
ounces stroug alchol for seven days and'
then strained. With this tincture the"
furs and clothes are sprinkled over and
rolled up ia sheets. This remedy is in
constant use in Russia, under the name
of kChincse Tincture for Moths," and ia
found very effective.
It is said that a strip of woolen cloth is
far superior for lamp winking to that iu
common use; it may be cut any length'
j as long as it is ot the proper width ; it
- gives a more brilliant light, has less heat,
i loss dirt, is less trouble iu trimming, and
is loss liable to explode. The above in
formation will be useful to people in the "
country, who frequently have to send a
considerable distance for a wick suitable;
for their lamp. ...

The Kington (N. Y.) Argus says that
Henry, Van Buren, a butther of that
place, fcas a Boh, recently purchased at
Albany that weighs about 1,800 pounds
and is larger than most of the larger seiz
