    Tlia Pennsylvania Railroad.
. The annual report of the business of
the J'enn'a Railroad Company,ybr the

meeting of shareholders on Tuesday
February 19, in Philadelphia. From it
we learn that the capital of the company
is' 820,000,000. Tbo niortgagp debt in
SU,S84f8-lO, and other liabilities 15,378,
H!)4 making an aggregate of $15,263,

is put down at $13,500,000. In addition,
the company claims credit for the llar-
risburg Railroad, 81,585,550; Columbia
Railroad and State Canals, 80,000,000 :
equipment of road, $3,3GI,215 ; real estate
and telegraph line, 83,471,-131, and ex
tension of trunk line west to the Monon-
pahela, and east to the Delaware, S2,121,-
157 making an aggregate of $30,890,
403. The company presents other credits
in bills receivable stocks, bonds, ceo., to
the amount of 815, 247.742. Tho Rros3
earnings of the road, and of the roads
worked in connection with it, except the
Philadelphia, and Erie road, for the past
Year are t IG,ob3,8iS2, and the total ex
penses, ordinary aad extraordinary, $12,-
TiM.'JU!) leaving an excess of $3,792,-
iVxi. ine whole number oi passengers
carrncd in 1S65 was 2,801,330, and dur
ing the pait year 2,673,598. The aver
age distance traveled by each pa5senger
was o2 miles, and the previous year la
miles, this difference beinir due to the
larger amount cf through travel and
troops in 18G5. The freight carried was
5,452,748, embracing 1,413,171 tons of
coal. The increase in the coal traffic is
339,424 tons, and the whole tonnage of
the road exceeds fhat of 18G5, G53,90S
tons, or nearly 25 per cent. The work
ing expenses were G4 per cent, of gross
receipts on the Company s roads. The
company's canals in the year earned
$297,807, against 81S1,015 for 1865
The expenses were 8233,433 showing a
not profit of 864,429.
The President's Salary.
The notion that the President receives
but $25,000 a year to pay all his house
hold expenses, and the dignity of his of
fice, though very generally entertained,
is. iile erroneous. It would be diSeult
to make both ends meet in these tight
times, were such the fact. IJut -it is far
otherwise. On the contrary, most of the
later Presidents have managed to save
ffomeihing out of their salary. Of course
the President has no rent to pay. U s
house is furnished from top to bottom by
Corgi ess, not an article being paid for
out of his own jpocket. His fuel is sup
plied at the national expense; all his ser
vants are paid by special appropriations;
his stable is kept by the same means;
and so are his over garden and kitchen
garden, bis conservatories, and his pleasure
grounds. Kveu Lis balls and dinner par
ties arc paid fur out of the public purse.
Some idea of the amount expecded by
Con press for the support of the Presiuen
cy may be fenced by considering the fol
lowing items in the last appropriation
bill:
Fuel for the President's iouse, 812,030
l'aiutn:g the President s house,
Ilepar'mg the Conservatory of the
o rc
President's bouse, 10,000
Refurnishing the President's
house, m 76,000
Lighting the President's Louse,
Capitol, &c.t 110,000
m ?2 10,000
These items by no rcearis .include all
the expenditures for the Whits House.
An U-mblisM Indent of th3 Esbel
Congress.
It U stated that a few months before
the fall of Richmond, Ya., while the rebel
Congress was deeply concerned about the
cruelty an 1 baibarity of the North, a wo
man of th.it city walked into the House
of Representatives and attacked three
luetalers- with a cowhide, castigating
them mercilessly. At last the Speaker
cauoht the virago in hi3 arras, and held
her there until she went into hysterics.
She said her intention wa3 to chastise the
entire body because of its abuse of the
North, and she made a very gooJ com
tnanccment certainly. After her depar
ture the House parsed a resolution that
the body recommend to the press the im
propriety of making public the unhappy
incident, as a matter calculated to brio-'
reproach upon the dignity of Southern la-
gisiamrs. J te lucuiacna papers uever
meHtioced the unhappy circumstance, and
only recently was the story told by a re
constructed member of the defunct
House.

PATENT WHITE WIRE FOR

3 Liu ieae to can your attention to an
i c-otire'y new quality of Wire, known as
Y h;te H ire, possessing a xoating which pre
vents it trom even corodmg, or turning from
its uniform whiteness, during any number of
years, and on which Letters Patent have
been secured. It has been found to be the
only article suitable for a clothes line, except
the old fashioned rope or cord, which always
gives so much trouble and annoyance, by
breaking, rotting outand discoloring clothes.
and by being obliged to put it up and take it
down every time used. With this Wire
Clothes Line you have none of these annoy
ancee, as when it is once put up it gives you
no more trouble until the stakes or posts to
w hich it is attached rot down. After usin
it, we are confident you will fully corroborate
the statements of thousands of others in its
praise. Over 160,000 lines have already
