The defendent by the same act may be guilty of treason against both the United I O . states and the State of Tennessee, and may be punished bv both Governments' tor tno same act . 2. The court and iury can take iudi- cial notice of the public history of the country, and it being one of the objects or tue Jatc war to change the relation of Treasury notes or other obligations issued Tennessee to the Federal Union, it was; underJany act of Congress, whether bearing a war against the btate, as well as the: interest or not, in exchange for any des Unitcd States. j cription of bonds authorized by the act 3. The pardon of the President, in such; to which this is an amendment, and also cases, purges the offence against the Uui - ted States, but does not effect the offense against the State. 4. The fact that the Rebellion assum ed the dimensions and recosuized char- acter ol a civil and public war docs not prevent the citizens of Tennessee who en - tercd the service of the Confederate States, after that time, from being pun ished as traitors by the State courts of Tennessee. 5. The Act of Assembly, passed on the Si'd day of May, 1861, repealing so much of the treason act as made offenses against the United States punishable as treason against the State is utterly null ( ten millions of dollars may be retired can and void, have been passed by legislatures; celled within six. months from the pas whoni the court judicially knows to have 'sage of this act, and thereafter not more been engaged in treasonable purposes G. The decisions and opinions of the Supreme Court of the United States in the cases of Amy Warwick and others, and Mrs. Alexander's cotton and others, are no authority whatever in trials for trea son. 7. Although the laws of nations pro tect billigerents during the existence of var from prosecution in the civil courts for treason, yet, after tue war is over, and. peace declared, the soldiers who partici - pated in the rebellion or war, may be pun ished as traitors therefor. 8. In trials for felony, the jury are judges of both the law and the facts, but onl-judges of the law as propounded to them by the court. God will not be Mocked. We have numerous instances on record, says the Allen town Register, of the judg mentof the Almighty suddently over taking the wicked, giving practical illus trations of the truth of His Word, which ', declares that "The wicked shall not live out half their days' An instance of this kind occurred near our neighboring town of Cat asauqua last week. A man named Miller about three weeks ago, made au agree ment with some of his compariious in vice, to meet him at a certain place every Sun day, when he would administer to them the holy ordinance of Communion, giving them whiskey and crackers. This mock ceremony was performed every Sunday, but the hands which administered the mock emblems in derision, were so man gled by the premature discharge of a blast,, last week, as to require amputation. He was also severely burned about the head. After two days of extreme suffer ing, he went to meet his insulted Crea tor. Fantastic Marriages. A widow lady of Danville, Ky., took an orphan boy to raise, quite small, and when he arrived at the age of eighteen she married him, being then in her fiftieth year. They lived many years together, happy as any couple. Ten years ago they took an orphan girl to raise. Last fall the old lady died, being ninety-six years of age, and in seven weeks after the old man married the girl they had raised, he being sixty-four years old and she eighteen. A farmer near Bay city, Michigan, lost his wife early one morning, recently j hitched up his team and drove to city with his servant girl to buy the garments for the dead ; and while there, 'married the girl, being a widower less than twelve hours. Soldiors' Convention. As the soldiers of Monroe county, in common with these in otherparts of the State, doubtless feel an interest in the convention to be held in Pittsburg in June next, their: attention is directed to the following address, issued last week, in relation to this subject, by General Hartranft. Measures should at once be taken to have delegates appointed, so that the county shall be represented in the convention : Harrisuurg, May 1, 1866. To the Soldiers of Pennsylvania : In obedience to the authority invested in me by a resolution adopted by the Convention of Soldiers, held in this city on the 8th day of March, 186G, I do hereby request all honorably discharged soldiers and sailors of Pennsy lvania to meet iu their respective legisla tive districts, and select delegates not exceediug five in number to represent their district in a Soldiers' Convention to be held at Pittsburg on Tuesday, the 5th of June, 10 o'clock, A. "M. Where any representative district comprises more than one county, the manner of selecting delegates i3 respectfully referred to the soldiers of the district for such conference as will result in a fair representation of each county. Citizens who have borne arms in defence of the nation against trea son, have an especial interest in the pur poses of this convention, and it is desira ble that as full a representation of the brave defenders of country as is possible shoull be secured on this occasion.
