American manufactures the American Watch Co. ofWalthani, Mass. Every one knows that the mechanism of the best manufactories of this country is uuenuallcd in any other part of the world. The genius of American median ics produced the cotton giu, the median ical reaper and mower, the sewing, ma chine, aud last but not least, the wonder ful machinery cf the American Watch Company of Waltham. This Company was established iu 1S50, and has grown . in proportions which entitle it to a first rank auione the manufacturing enter- prizes of the New World. It employs b tween 900 and 1,000 artizans of superior skill and character, and a large and thriv ing town has grown up iu its vicinity. The factory covers over three acres of ground, and as au illustration of its ex tent, we may ncntion that, it is supplied with more than GO miles of irou pipes aud produces an aggregate of nearly 75,000 watches per annum. The founders of this Company believed that the same deli cate mechanical processes which had pro duced such remarkablj' perfect results in larger machines, might be applied with even greater advantage io the production of the watch. The foreign time-pieces are made principal!' bj' hand, and except when. of high cost, an imperfect article, often out of repair, aud of little value is the result. Abroad, these mysterious -and infinitesimal organs which, when ag gregated, produce the watch.are the fruit of slow and toilsome manual processes In the results, there must of course be lack of that pefect unformity which is in dispensable for correct time-keeping. The constituent parts of the" American watch, on the other hand, are fashioned by the most delicate and accurate machin ery. W heels, pinions, springs, screws, absolutely uniform in weight circum ference, dimensions, and in every possible particular, arc turned out in myriads by unerring fingers of steel, and their pro per combination and adjustment by skilful workmen have given the Company its high reputation. Its watches not only go with the trade and go in the pockets of 200,000 people, but they go right and go everywhere. Exchange. A New State. The IIouso of Representatives at Wash ington on the 3d inst. passed the bill ad mitting the Territory of Colorado as a State of the Union. When the Pres ident signs the bill, Colorado will form the thirty-seventh State iu the sisterhood of our Republic, and thus another star fihall be added to the bright galaxy of our National banner. Colorado was organized as a Territory in 18G1, with its capital at Golden City. Its area embraces 100,475 square miles In 18G3 the population, including 15,000 Indians, was estimated at fully 70,000. It lies between the 37th and 4Lst parallels of north latitude, and the 102d and the 109th degrees of longitude wc,-t from Grcenwhich, being the 25th and 32d wes from Washington., and is direct ly west from Kansas. - Colorado is especially rich iu minerals, and gold is found abundantly in many portions of the State. During the past two years thousands of emigrants, from the East and West, have taken up lauds in this remote State, and are now engaged in developing its resources. Eepealofthe State Tax.
