HEAVY LOSS.
aslimgton, Aug. 1. Information
trom the Army of the Potomac, dated
July 30th 1 P. M., says :
After the explosion this morning eve

r j. . , - , ... ,i
r uu. u. .11 j uuu
uiiauiij. x iic programme was as loilows:
The miuc to be exploded at 3 A. 31.; the
batteries to open at once along the entire
line ; the 9th Corps to charge, supported
by the 18th (Aycrs') Division of the 5th
aiid the 3d Division of the 2d. The grea
ter part of the arrangement was carried
out as ordered, although the commence
ment was later than the hour designated
on account of the. fuse going out twice.
The explosion took place at precisely
4.40, aud the roar of artillery that imme
diately followed was almost deafening.
At half past five the charge was made,
and the- fort, with part of the litie each
side", was carried in brilliant style.
The -2nd division, which was in the
centre, adranced and carried the second
line, a short distance beyond the first.and
here rested, holding their ground with
the utmost determination' Tt was at this
time that the colored division, Brigadier
General lute in command, was pushed
forward and ordered to charge and carry
the crest of the hill, which would have
decided the contest The troops advauced
in good order as far as the first line, where
they received a galling fire, which check
ed them, and although quite a number
kept on, the greater portion seemed. to be
come utterly demoralized, part taking ref
uge in the fort and the balance running
to the rear as fast as possible. They
were rallied and pushed forward again
but without success. The greater part of
their officers being killed and wounded,
during this time they seemed to be with
out any one to manage them, when they
finally fell back to the rear, out of the
range of the vollej's of canister and mus
ketry that were ploughing through their
ranks. Their losses are very heavy, par
ticularly in officers
The loss in the 1st and 2d divisions was
also severe ; the latter having some 400
in hospital. The 18th Corps occupied a
part of the line; but their loss was not ve
ry great.
We jtqdkj about 250 prisoners, mostly
South 'Carolinians, and five battle-fiags.
All is quiet this morning, (Sunday)
the 31st. "

to take, but powerful to cure. Their pene

Cures'bave been made which surpass belief,

clergymen and physicians have lent their

n currency, and are' of equal convenience as
a permanent or temporary investment.
It is believed that no securities offer so
great inducements to' leaders as the various
descriptions of U. S Bonds. In all'othcr
forms of indebtedness, the faith or ability of
private parties or stock companies or sepa
rate commuhilie8''only is pledged for pay
ment, while for the debts of the Uuited
plates tne wiioic property oi ine country is
holden to secure the. payment of both princi
pal and interest in'coin.
These Ronds may be subscribed for in
sums form .$50 .up to any magnitude, on the
same terms, and are thus made equally avail
able to the smallest lender and the largest
capitalist. They can be converted into .mo
ney at any moment, and the holder will have
the benefit of the interest. :
It may be useful to state in this connec
tion tnat the total Funded Debt of the Uni
ted States on which interest is payable in
go!dron the 3d day of. March, 1864, was
8703,965,000. The interest on this debt for
the coming fiscal year will be S45,937,126,
while the customes revenue in gold for the
current fiscal year, ending June 30th, 1864
has' been so far . at the 'rate, of over $100,
000,000 per annum.
It will-he seen that even the present gol,
revenues of the Government are largely in
excess of the Treasury for the payment of
gold interest, while the recent increase of
the tariff will doubtless raise the annual re
ceipts from customs on the same amount of
importations, to 150,000,000 per annum.
Instructions to the National Banks acting
as loan agents were not issued from the Uni
ted States Treasury until March 26, but in
the first three weeks of April the subscrip
tions averaged more than-TEN MILLIONS
